FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Messiah University Men's soccer team fell to the top ranked Eagles of Mary Washington on Saturday, 2-1. The teams traded shots in the opening thirty minutes of the match, but it was the Eagles who found the net first in the 42nd minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Eagles doubled their lead 11 minutes into the second half.
Dylan Englehart scored late for the Falcons to make the score 2-1, but the Eagles held off a late offensive push by the Falcons to take the 2-1 victory.
Up next, the Falcons travel to Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa. on Wednesday Oct. 2 at 7 p.m.
First Half
The first half started off even, with two shots from Mary Washington in the first 10 minutes being followed by two shots of the Falcons own in the next five minutes from
Sam Phillips and
Grant Shreiner. The teams continued to trade shots for the next 25 minutes, as well as each team having one corner apiece. Neither team could find the back of the net until the 42nd minute, when a cross from a Mary Washington winger was sent into the box. The ball was misplayed by the Falcons defense and fell to an Eagles forward who put it into the wide-open net. The Eagles would take the 1-0 lead into the half.
Second Half
The second half began slow for both teams until the 56th minute. An Eagles midfielder received the ball just inside the Messiah half, carried the ball to the outside of the box and fired a shot into the top left corner to double the Eagles advantage, making it 2-0. Mary Washington continued the pressure, firing off four more shots in the next seven minutes. The Falcons then regained their footing in the match and in the 76th minute,
Davis Pagett found the ball on the right wing and sent in a cross. The cross evaded two Eagles defenders and found an incoming
Dylan Englehart, who headed the ball into the far corner for his first goal of the season, bringing the score to 2-1.
Adam Carter then came up with a huge save in the 81st minute to keep the score at 2-1. The Falcons made a late push, with shots from
Patrick Lee,
Sam Phillips, and
Jarec Morlote in the final five minutes, but they could not find the tying goal, as the top-ranked Eagles held on for the 2-1 victory.

Davis Pagett tallied one assist. The Falcons took eight shots, with three on goal. Mary Washington tallied 15 shots, with four shots on goal. The Falcons had one corner kick to the Eagles four.
