No. 5 Field Hockey Blanked by No. 4 Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. – No. 5 Messiah field hockey fell to No. 4 Salisbury University on Saturday night with a final score of 4-0. Salisbury scored three goals in the first quarter and added a fourth in the third quarter.

Messiah's next game is on Saturday, Sept. 14, when they face off with No. 7 Christopher Newport at Mary Washington.

First Quarter
Salisbury was first to strike with a goal at the 4:08 mark. They were quick to add a second just 32 seconds later. The next four minutes were played back and forth in the midfield, with neither team registering any shots. Salisbury found the back of the cage for the third time of the quarter at the 8:07 mark. Messiah rounded out the last five minutes of the quarter with three penalty corners. Leah Bryner was able to fire a shot on the third corner and nearly secured a goal for the Falcons but Salisbury made a defensive save to hold the Falcons at zero.

Second Quarter
The Falcons looked to put a score on the board after the break, with shots from Mallory Kline and Kelsey Heltzel. Both shots were blocked and the score remained 3-0 in Salisbury's favor. Messiah earned a corner with just under nine minutes remaining in the half but were unable to get a shot off.

Third Quarter
In the opening four minutes of the second half, Salisbury took two penalty corners and registered one shot that was saved by Eva Hancock before fining the back of the cage to bring the score to 4-0. The Falcons looked to convert a penalty corner into a goal when Carrie Bair fired a shot, but the Seagulls goalie was able to make the save. Three minutes later, Eva Hancock made a save of her own to keep the Seagulls from adding to their total. Hailey Womer put a shot on frame with four minutes in the quarter but the Salisbury goalie picked up another save.

Fourth Quarter
Each team registered one shot during the final quarter of play, both on goal. Mallory Kline took a shot five minutes into the quarter but couldn't slide it past the goalie. Eva Hancock picked up another save with less than five to play to keep the score 4-0.

Stats
Salisbury outshot Messiah 8-7, placing seven on goal to Messiah's four. Messiah took seven penalty corners to Salisbury's five. Eva Hancock had three saves in goal.
