GRANTHAM, Pa. – On Wednesday evening, the Messiah University men's soccer team used a game-winning goal from
Davis Pagett in the 52nd to defeat the Warriors of Lycoming College, 1-0. The Falcons got 12 shots off in the first half with one shot on goal but could not find the back of the net and the game remained scoreless at the break.
Davis Pagett scored the game-winner from
Patrick Lee in the 52nd minute to give the Falcons the 1-0 lead. The Falcons shut down the Warriors attack the rest of the game and earned the 1-0 win.
Up next, the Falcons host the Pride of Widener University on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 3:00 p.m. on Shoemaker Field for the homecoming game.
First Half
The Falcons opened the game with possession and pushed the pace in the attacking third. The Falcons got their first shot on goal in the 24th minute from
Kyle Spodnik, but the shot was saved, and the game remained scoreless. Spodnik got another great chance in the 27th minute, but his shot ringed off the crossbar and the game stayed tied. The Falcons kept the pressure on the Warriors defense for the remainder of the first half but could not get a shot on goal and the two teams remained scoreless headed into the half.
Second Half
The Falcons opened the second half with a great scoring chance on an
Ethan Quadrini shot on goal, but the Warriors goalkeeper made the save to keep the Falcons off the board. The Falcons continued to put the pressure on the Warriors defense after the great scoring opportunity. In the 52nd minute,
Grant Shreiner,
Elijah Perry, and
Davis Pagett quickly connected on a few passes to push the Falcons back into the attaching third. Pagett then passed the ball to
Ethan Quadrini at the top of the box. Quadrini then passed a ball that was saved by
Patrick Lee from going out of bounds near the far-side end line. Lee waited for an open pass and found Pagett making a run into the box. Pagett then ripped a one-timer into the back of the goal to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The Falcons got more shots on goal from Pagett,
Patrick Lee,
Gianni Pezzino, and
Isaac Schmitke, but could not find the back of the goal and the Falcons earned the 1-0 win.
