Men’s Soccer and Widener End in Scoreless Draw

GRANTHAM, Pa. – On Saturday afternoon, the Messiah University men's soccer team and the Pride of Widener University ended in a scoreless draw in the MAC Commonwealth opener. The Falcons ripped three shots on goal in the first half, but the Pride's goalkeeper kept the Falcons off the board and the score remained scoreless at the half. The Falcons kept pressure on the Pride's defense throughout the entire second half. The Pride, however, got some key saves and prevented the Falcons from scoring to end the game in a scoreless draw.
 
Up next, the Falcons play the University of Lynchburg in a neutral site game on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at the Horizon's Edge Sports Campus in Rockingham County, Virginia at 6:00 p.m.

First Half
The Falcons looked to get on the board early with a Davis Pagett shot, but the shot rang off the post and the game remained scoreless in the seventh minute. Just four minute later, Kyle Spodnik sent a shot on goal, but the Pride goalkeeper made the save to keep the Falcons off the board. The Pride got their first chance in the 15th minute, but Kessler Forrest made a save and kept the game tied. The Falcons got a great chance in the 41st minute on a Sam Phillips shot that looked like it was headed into the top-right corner, but the Pride goalkeeper made another save to keep the Falcons scoreless. The Pride got one more shot on goal to end the first half, but Forrest made another save to keep the game tied. Zach Buys got the final shot on goal for the Falcons in the final minute of the half, but the Pride's goalkeeper made another save to keep the game scoreless going into the break.
 
Second Half
After some back-and-forth play, the Falcons got a couple of great scoring opportunities on back-to-back corner kicks. Sam Phillips and Caleb Daniels got shots on goal, but each was saved, and the game remained scoreless in the 66th minute. The Falcons got another great chance in the 79th minute, but Kyle Spodnik's shot rang off the crossbar. The Falcons continued to put the pressure on the Pride's defense with shots on goal from Davis Pagett and Patrick Lee, but once again the Pride's goalkeeper stood tall and made two final saves to end the game with a scoreless draw.
 
Stats
The Falcons totaled 18 shots with seven shots on goal. The Pride tallied four shots with three shots on goal. The Falcons earned nine corner kicks to the Pride's two. Kessler Forrest started in goal for the Falcons and made three saves.
