Falcons Earn Win in Conference Opener

READING, Pa. – The Messiah University Field Hockey team traveled to Alvernia University on Friday afternoon to take on the Golden Wolves of Alvernia University in their Commonwealth Conference opener. Messiah took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Ellie Lefever found Chelsea Carpenter to get the Falcons on the board. The Falcons extended their lead to two when Linsey Campione found Ellie Lefever open during a penalty corner. Messiah had a number of shots in the remaining time but were unable to extend their lead and earned the 2-0 victory to open conference play.

The Falcons return to Anderson Field on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 7:00 p.m. when they host the Mustangs of Stevenson University.

First Half
The Falcons dominated the early minutes of play with both Naomi Lyter and Ellie Lefever firing shots on goal that forced saves by the Golden Wolves' goalie. The Golden Wolves looked to strike with a shot of their own but hit the post. Chelsea Carpenter had a shot blocked before Lefever placed a second on frame that was saved. Messiah earned a pair of penalty corners but were unable to register a shot.

In the second quarter, Anna Bea Koenig missed just wide, and Audrey Weger had a shot blocked before Messiah earned a penalty corner just over two minutes into the second quarter. Ellie Lefever was able to find Chelsea Carpenter for the first goal of the game, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Carpenter fired a shot wide less than a minute later before the teams remained shotless through the rest of the quarter and the Falcons held the 1-0 lead at halftime.

Second Half
The third quarter was spent with the teams battling back and forth in the midfield with neither team having the chance to register a shot.

Just under four minutes into the final quarter, Chelsea Carpenter had a shot saved by the Alvernia goalie before the Falcons were awarded a penalty corner. Lindsey Campione found Ellie Lefever to extend the Messiah lead to 2-0 with 11 minutes remaining in the game. Over the next five minutes, Messiah earned a pair of penalty corners and registered three shots. Anna Bea Koenig missed just wide while Ellie Lefever had a shot blocked and a second saved by the Golden Wolves' goalie. Carpenter had a chance to extend the lead once again with a penalty stroke opportunity, but the Golden Wolves' goalie was able to kick away the shot to keep Alvernia's deficit at 2-0. The Falcons had three penalty corner opportunities in the final four minutes and Lefever fired two shots but was unable to find the back of the net.

Stats
Ellie Lefever led the Falcons with a goal and an assist. Chelsea Carpenter also notched a goal while Lindsey Campione tallied an assist. The Falcons outshot the Golden Wolves 16-3, placing nine on goal. Messiah earned 12 penalty corners to Alvernia's two. Joy Lippert made one save in goal for the Falcons.
