READING, Pa. – The Messiah Women's Volleyball team traveled to Penn State Berks on Friday, sweeping the Lions in three sets (25-19, 25-19, 25-17).
In set one, Messiah had a few big leads, but the Lions fought back to tie the set each time before Messiah pulled away late to take the set. Messiah kept up the momentum in the second set, winning it to take a two-set lead. In set three, Messiah grabbed another early lead and maintained it to take the set and the match.
Makenzie Adams and
Sydney Wolfe led the balanced Messiah attack with eight kills each.
Katie Quesenberry added six kills with two blocks and
Leah Youtzy added five blocks.
Up next, the Falcons welcome the Eagles of Eastern University to Jordan Court in Hitchcock Arena on Wednesday, October 22, at 7:00 p.m.
Set One
Messiah jumped out to an early 7-3 lead behind two kills from
Sydney Wolfe and a service ace from
Hannah Thomas. The Lions gained some momentum, tying the set at eight, but two kills from
Cassidy Dell and one kill from
Leah Youtzy gave Messiah the lead back, at 12-9.
Sydney Wolfe picked up another kill and
Makenzie Adams added her first of the match, but the Lions once again tied the set, this time at 16. Penn State Berks could not keep up the momentum, with
Leah Youtzy and
Cynthia Boller combining for two double blocks, followed by a kill from Boller to give Messiah the lead back, 21-18.
Katie Quesenberry and
Makenzie Adams would each pick up one more kill, with Messiah taking the set 25-19.
Set Two
Messiah started the second set strong, with a
Cassidy Dell service ace and a
Sydney Wolfe kill giving them a 3-1 lead.
Leah Youtzy picked up a solo block to make it 4-1, quickly followed by a kill from Youtzy and
Katie Quesenberry to make it 6-3, Messiah. Messiah kept up the strong offense, with
Hannah MacCartney tallying two kills, plus one kill each from
Cynthia Boller and
Makenzie Adams to make it 10-6.
Ellie Hansen picked up a service ace, and
Sydney Wolfe and
Cynthia Boller each picked up a kill as Messiah extended their lead to six, at 15-9. Messiah kept up the strong play throughout the set, with two kills each from
Cynthia Boller and
Katie Quesenberry, plus one more kill from
Sydney Wolfe helping the Falcons take the set, 25-19.
Set Three
Hannah Thomas dropped in a service ace and
Makenzie Adams tallied two kills to give Messiah a quick 4-1 lead.
Katie Quesenberry and
Hannah MacCartney got in on the action with two kills each, helping to extend the lead to four points, at 10-6.
Leah Youtzy and
Sydney Wolfe both tacked on a kill, followed by another kill from
Makenzie Adams, building the Falcons lead to six, at 13-7. Adams grabbed another kill, quickly followed by a kill from
Ellie Hansen and a few Lion errors to make it 20-11. Next,
Katie Quesenberry towered above the net for a solo block to give Messiah a double-digit lead, 21-11.
Cynthia Boller,
Makenzie Adams, and
Sydney Wolfe each grabbed one more kill for the set, with Messiah winning 25-17 to complete the sweep.
