Second Half Surge Pushes Men’s Soccer Past Golden Wolves

GRANTHAM, Pa. – On Wednesday evening, the Messiah University men's soccer used three second-half goals to defeat the Golden Wolves of Alvernia University, 3-0. The Falcons controlled most of the possession and got five shots on goal in the first half but could not get a shot past the Alvernia goalkeeper and the game remained scoreless headed into the break. The Falcons got on the board in the 52nd minute on a Matt Griffin goal from Gabe Redcay to give the Falcons the 1-0 lead. In the 60th minute, Patrick Lee scored the Falcons second goal from Sam Phillips and Jalen Keller to extend the Falcons lead to two. Ethan Quadrini scored the final goal for the Falcons with 18 seconds remaining to give the Falcons the 3-0 win.
 
Up next, the Falcons travel to Owings Mills, Md. to take on the Mustangs of Stevenson University on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 4:00 p.m.

First Half
The Falcons started the game controlling possession and looked for an early goal. Sam Phillips and Kyle Spodnik each sent shots on goal, but the Alvernia goalkeeper made both saves to keep the game scoreless in the 12th minute. The Falcons next couple of best chances came in the 29th minute with a shot on goal from Patrick Lee and Phillips, but each shot was saved to keep the game tied. The Falcons got one more chance in the 41st minute on an Ethan Gregory shot on goal, but the Alvernia goalkeeper made one final save of the first half to put the score at 0-0 headed into the half.
 
Second Half
The Falcons continued to push the pace to start the second half and looked to break the scoreless tie in the 52nd minute with a corner kick. Gabe Redcay sent the corner near the front post and Matt Griffin hit the ball into the back of the net to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The Falcons looked to add to their lead in the 60th minute. The Falcons looked to advance the ball into the attacking third and Patrick Lee sent a pass just outside of the box to Jalen Keller. Keller then sent a pass to Sam Phillips towards the near post. Phillips then quickly sent a low pass in front of the goal and Patrick Lee sent a shot into the back of the goal to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead. The Golden Wolves looked to make a comeback and sent a shot on goal in the 71st minute, but Kessler Forrest made the save to keep the Falcons 2-0 lead. The Falcons continued to put pressure on the Golden Wolves and added two more shots on goal from Grant Shreiner and Ethan Quadrini, but each shot was saved to keep the Golden Wolves within two. The Golden Wolves looked for another chance to get back within one in the 85th minute, but Forrest made another save to hold the Golden Wolves off the scoreboard. Ethan Quadrini scored the final goal for the Falcons with 18 seconds remaining in the game to give the Falcons the 3-0 win.

Matt Griffin, Patrick Lee, and Ethan Quadrini each scored a goal for the Falcons. Jalen Keller, Sam Phillips, and Gabe Redcay each tallied an assist. The Falcons totaled 31 shots with 11 shots on goal. The Golden Wolves tallied seven shots with two shots on goal. The Falcons earned eight corner kicks to Alvernia's two. Kessler Forrest earned the win in goal for the Falcons and made two saves.
