GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Messiah Women's Volleyball team traveled to Grove City, Pa. for a tri-match against the Cougars of Chatham University and the Wolverines of Grove City College. The Falcons went 1-1 on the day, defeating Chatham in four sets (26-24, 25-16, 22-25, 25-17) and falling to Grove City in three sets (9-25, 21-25, 15-25).
In match one against Chatham, the teams traded a few big runs throughout the set, before Messiah defended a set-point enroute to taking the set, 26-24. Messiah used that momentum to take the second set comfortably. The teams battled in the third set, with Chatham pulling away late to take it. In the fourth set, Messiah began to roll again, winning the set and the match.
Makenzie Adams and
Cassidy Dell both had double-doubles for the Falcons, with Adams having 15 kills and 10 digs and Dell totaling 37 assists and 16 digs.
In match two, Grove City comfortably took the first set and followed up by winning a close second set. The third set started out even, but Grove City pulled away, winning the set and the match.
Makenzie Adams and
Cynthia Boller each had 12 kills for the Falcons.
Up next, the Falcons are back in MAC Commonwealth action, traveling to Chester, Pa. for a matchup against Widener University on Tuesday, October 28, at 7:00 p.m.
Match One: Messiah – 3, Chatham – 1
Set One
Katie Quesenberry totaled two early kills, and
Sydney Wolfe added a kill as the teams traded points to a 5-5 start. The teams continued going back and forth, with
Sydney Wolfe adding another kill and
Cynthia Boller picking up her first two kills to help give Messiah a 12-11 lead. Chatham responded with a six-point run before
Katie Quesenberry got a kill to give serve back to Messiah. Chatham won the next point to restore the lead to five, but Messiah then won six of the next seven points to tie the set 19-19.
Leah Youtzy,
Cynthia Boller, and
Makenzie Adams all picked up kills for Messiah, but Chatham were able to get to set point, up 24-22. However, Messiah used kills from
Sydney Wolfe and
Katie Quesenberry to help win the next four points, taking the set 26-24.
Set Two
Messiah came out on fire to start the second set, with four kills from
Makenzie Adams, one kill each from
Leah Youtzy and
Cassidy Dell, and four players combining for two double blocks to give the Falcons a 10-2 advantage.
Cynthia Boller added a kill and
Claire Marzolino dropped in a service ace as the Falcons lead grew to 10, at 14-4. Boller and
Makenzie Adams each added another kill as Messiah maintained their big lead, up 18-11 late in the set. Kills from
Sydney Wolfe,
Katie Quesenberry,
Makenzie Adams, and
Cynthia Boller helped Messiah finish the set, winning it 25-16.
Set Three
Makenzie Adams tallied a kill,
Sydney Wolfe added two kills, and
Leah Youtzy scored a service ace, with Messiah quickly up 6-3. Chatham gained some momentum, winning three straight points, with the teams then trading points to a 9-8 Messiah lead. The Falcons won six of the next eight points behind kills from
Leah Youtzy and
Cynthia Boller, plus a service ace from
Erin Eby, giving the Falcons a 15-10 lead. Chatham responded well, winning five straight points to tie the set 15-15.
Makenzie Adams grabbed two kills and
Cynthia Boller added another as the teams went back and forth, tied 20-20 late in the set. Chatham then pulled away and won the set 25-22, forcing a fourth set.
Set Four
Leah Youtzy,
Sydney Wolfe,
Makenzie Adams, and
Cynthia Boller all picked up early kills in the set, helping Messiah out to a 5-3 lead.
Claire Marzolino followed up with two service aces and
Cassidy Dell added a kill to extend the lead to six, at 9-3.
Leah Youtzy tallied another kill and
Erin Eby dropped in a service ace as Messiah continued to pull away, up 13-5. The Falcons maintained the lead the rest of the way, with kills from
Makenzie Adams,
Leah Youtzy,
Katie Quesenberry, and
Sydney Wolfe helping the Falcons finish the set, winning 25-17.

Match Two: Messiah – 0, Grove City – 3
Set One
Grove City started out the set flying, taking a quick double-digit lead, at 11-1. The Wolverines kept up the pressure, pushing the lead to 12 at 14-2.
Cassidy Dell grabbed a kill, and
Cynthia Boller tallied three kills, but Grove City maintained the big lead, up 19-7.
Makenzie Adams added one more kill for the Falcons, but Grove City closed out the set, taking it 25-9.
Set Two
Makenzie Adams and
Cynthia Boller each scored two kills as the teams battled to a 5-5 tie to start the set. Adams added a third kill, but the Wolverines began to build a lead, up 13-9.
Sydney Wolfe tacked on three kills and
Makenzie Adams picked up two more kills, but the Grove City lead stayed at four, with the Wolverines up 19-15. Messiah kept fighting, with Adams scoring another kill and dropping in a service ace, followed by two
Cynthia Boller kills to cut the Wolverines lead down to two, at 22-20. However, Grove City would win three of the last four points to take the set.
Set Three
Makenzie Adams had three early kills for Messiah, with the set tied 4-4 early.
Katie Quesenberry added and kill, followed by two kills from
Cynthia Boller, with the set still tied. Messiah won the next point to take an 8-7 lead, but the Wolverines won five straight points to take control of the set, up 12-8.
Makenzie Adams added another kill to stop the run, but Grove City then went on another five-point run, now up 17-9.
Makenzie Adams added one final kill and service ace, and
Cynthia Boller tallied three more kills, but the Falcons couldn't catch up, dropping the set 25-15.
