FREDERICK, Md. – The Messiah Women's Volleyball team traveled to Hood College on Wednesday night, sweeping the Blazers in three sets (25-21, 25-20, 25-19) to move to 2-1 in MAC Commonwealth play.
In set one, Messiah took an early lead, but Hood battled to take the lead late in the set. Messiah responded well, taking over to win the set, 25-21. In set two, Messiah was more dominant, holding the lead throughout the set and taking a 2-0 lead in the match. Hood started the third set strong, but Messiah quickly took over. Hood battled and kept it close, but it wasn't enough as Messiah took the set, sweeping the match.
Makenzie Adams led the Falcons with 18 kills, while
Julia Bowen added 11.
Cassidy Dell tallied a double-double with 31 assists and 10 digs.
Up next, Messiah travels to Huntingdon, Pa. for a tri-match against Juniata College and Catholic University of America on Saturday, October 11.
Set One
Two kills from
Julia Bowen and one from
Katie Quesenberry gave Messiah an early 4-2 lead. Messiah kept up the early pressure, extending the lead to six at 9-3, after two kills from
Sydney Wolfe, one from
Makenzie Adams, and a service ace from
Cassidy Dell.
Makenzie Adams added two more kills, but Hood started to make some noise in the set, cutting the Messiah lead down to one and forcing a timeout, with the Falcons up 13-12.
Hannah MacCartney picked up a kill out of the timeout, but Hood won the next two points to tie the set, 14-14.
Makenzie Adams picked up another kill, but Hood took their first lead of the set just past the halfway point, up 17-16. However,
Makenzie Adams began to take over, grabbing two more kills and adding three service aces to give the Falcons the lead back, 23-19.
Julia Bowen and
Katie Quesenberry then each tallied kills for Messiah to win the set, 25-21.
Set Two
Claire Marzolino started the second set with a service ace, quickly followed by a kill from
Katie Quesenberry, giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
Makenzie Adams and
Sydney Wolfe each grabbed kills as the teams battled early in the set to a 7-7 deadlock. Adams picked up another kill and
Claire Marzolino added another ace, with Messiah winning four straight points to force a Hood timeout at 11-7, Messiah.
Makenzie Adams grabbed another kill after the timeout to make it 12-7, but Hood responded by winning four straight points to make it 12-11. Messiah then got some momentum back, winning four or the next five points, with kills from
Sydney Wolfe and
Cassidy Dell and a double block from Dell and
Katie Quesenberry making it 16-12, Messiah.
Julia Bowen and
Makenzie Adams each grabbed a kill to keep up the pressure forcing a Hood timeout, with Messiah up 20-15. After the timeout,
Makenzie Adams and
Katie Quesenberry each grabbed one more kill and
Courtney Wolf dropped in a service ace, with Messiah winning the set 25-20.
Set Three
Hood started the first set on a small run, taking a 3-0 lead.
Makenzie Adams got a kill to get the Falcons first point, followed by a service ace to make it 3-2. A
Julia Bowen kill then helped to quickly tie the set, 4-4. Bowen grabbed two more kills to give Messiah their first lead of the set, at 6-5, followed by another kill from
Makenzie Adams, with Messiah leading 8-7. Hood responded by winning the next four points to take the lead back at 11-8. The Falcons responded well with a balanced attack, as
Makenzie Adams,
Katie Quesenberry, and
Julia Bowen all added kills to tie the set, 12-12. Adams followed up the strong offense with two straight service aces to give the Falcons the lead back, 14-12.
Julia Bowen tallied two more kills and
Sydney Wolfe added another as Messiah maintained the lead, up 20-16 late.
Makenzie Adams added three more kills to put the Falcons just one point away from winning the set, and
Julia Bowen scored one final kill to give Messiah the set and the match.
Stats
Makenzie Adams led the Falcons with 18 kills, while
Julia Bowen added 11.
Cassidy Dell tallied a double-double with 31 assists and 10 digs.
