CHESTER, Pa. – The Messiah University Field Hockey team traveled to Widener University on Saturday, November 1 to conclude the regular season. After 53 scoreless minutes of play, the Falcons earned a penalty corner, and
Aubrey Clark was able to find the back of the cage to give Messiah the 1-0 lead. Neither team registered a shot in the remaining time, and the Falcons earned the 1-0 victory to conclude regular season play.
The Falcons will be back in action on Wednesday, November 5 at a time and location to be determined. Messiah will know their opponent following the conclusion of games remaining today. First Half
The Falcons possessed the ball heavily in the first quarter.
Naomi Lyter fired the first shot just over three minutes in but was blocked by a Pride defender. Possession remained in the midfield before Messiah earned a penalty corner at the 8:20 mark.
Ellie Lefever had her shot blocked before
Chelsea Carpenter fired the second chance shot just wide.
Caitlyn Weatherill fired a shot just wide after the Falcons earned their second penalty corner with just over three minutes to play but the teams remained scoreless through the first quarter.
Messiah's possession game continued early in the second with the Falcons earning a pair of penalty corners just over a minute into play. The first corner opportunity resulted in a blocked shot from
Chelsea Carpenter before the second resulted in a blocked shot by
Naomi Lyter. A minute later
Audrey Weger missed just wide. On the next possession,
Ellie Lefever had a shot blocked before Lyter fired a shot on goal that was saved by the Widener goalie. Lefever and
Lexi Hanlin each had a shot blocked before the Pride gained possession and fired their first shot of the game wide. The Falcons fired three more shots off target to end the first half.
Second Half
In the second half,
Olivia Zaskoda missed a pair of shots wide before
Naomi Lyter placed one on goal that was saved by the Pride goalie.
Chelsea Carpenter then fired a shot on goal that was saved by the goalie before Messiah earned a penalty corner.
Ellie Lefever was able to fire a shot but missed wide. Carpenter fired another shot on goal that forced a save by the Widener goalie before the Pride earned a pair of penalty corners. The Falcons defense held strong, and Widener was not able to register a shot on either penalty corner. The Falcons fired two more shots that were blocked, remaining scoreless with the Pride with one quarter of play remaining.
Messiah had a pair of shots blocked before earning their first penalty corner five minutes into the final quarter.
Chelsea Carpenter was able to fire a shot on goal, but it was saved by the Widener goalie. A penalty corner opportunity three minutes later resulted in a shot from
Aubrey Clark that found the back of the cage to give Messiah a 1-0 lead with just over six minutes remaining in regulation. Neither team registered a shot in the remaining time, and the Falcons claimed the 1-0 win to close out the regular season.
