OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Messiah Women's Volleyball team traveled to Stevenson University on Wednesday night for a MAC Commonwealth Semi-Final matchup against the Mustangs. The Falcons would win the first set, but drop the next three, falling in four sets (25-23, 20-25, 14-25, 20-25).
In set one, the teams battled back and forth in a closely contested set, with Messiah pulling away late to take a one-set lead. Stevenson took an early lead in the second set, and Messiah couldn't close the gap, dropping the set to tie the match at a set apiece. In set three, the Mustangs took a big lead early and never gave it up, winning the set by double digits. In the fourth set, the teams battled, but Stevenson pulled away to take the set and the match.
Makenzie Adams had a double-double for the Falcons with 14 kills and 11 digs.
Sydney Wolfe had 12 kills, while
Julia Bowen and
Katie Quesenberry each added 11 kills.
Set One
The teams traded points early to a 3-3 tie, with
Erin Eby picking up a kill for Messiah. The Falcons offense began to roll, with two kills from
Makenzie Adams and one kill from
Courtney Wolf giving Messiah a 7-3 lead. The Mustangs picked up three straight points to make it 7-6, but
Makenzie Adams and
Katie Quesenberry combined for a block to stop Stevenson from tying the set. The Mustangs won the next two points to tie the set 8-8, but
Julia Bowen grabbed her first kill to give the lead back to Messiah, at 9-8.
Sydney Wolfe and
Leah Youtzy each added kills for Messiah as the teams traded points to a 12-12 tie halfway through the set. Next, the Falcons used kills from Wolfe,
Katie Quesenberry, and
Makenzie Adams to take the lead back, 16-13. Stevenson used three-straight points to tie the set again but kills from
Leah Youtzy and
Julia Bowen helped Messiah win three-straight points, leading 19-16. Stevenson instantly responded with another three-point run to tie the set, but
Julia Bowen picked up three kills in the next four points, helping Messiah grab the lead back at 22-20.
Leah Youtzy and
Sydney Wolfe picked up a double block followed by a kill from
Makenzie Adams to give Messiah set-point at 24-20, but the Mustangs won the next three points, making it 24-23. However,
Sydney Wolfe would grab one final kill to finish the set, with Messiah winning 25-23.
Set Two
Steveson won the first four points of the set, taking control early. Messiah responded well, with kills from
Sydney Wolfe and
Makenzie Adams and a service ace from
Courtney Wolf helping the Falcons win four of the next five points. Adams grabbed another kill, but the Mustangs kept the lead, up 8-6.
Julia Bowen added two kills for Messiah, but the Stevenson lead grew to four, at 13-9.
Makenzie Adams,
Sydney Wolfe, and
Katie Quesenberry all picked up kills to cut the Mustangs lead to two, at 14-12, but Stevenson fought back to build the lead up to five points, at 20-15.
Julia Bowen,
Makenzie Adams,
Leah Youtzy,
Sydney Wolfe, and
Katie Quesenberry all grabbed one more kill each for Messiah, but Stevenson kept their lead at five, taking the set 25-20.
Set Three
Sydney Wolfe and
Katie Quesenberry picked up early kills for Messiah, but the Mustangs stormed out to a 10-3 lead.
Leah Youtzy and
Julia Bowen each picked up a kill to make it 10-5, giving some momentum to Messiah.
Sydney Wolfe added another kill, and
Makenzie Adams tallied two kills, but the Mustangs lead remained five points, at 14-9. Next, Stevenson began to extend their lead, leading 22-12, with
Katie Quesenberry added a couple kills. However, the Mustangs quickly finished the set, taking it 25-14.
Set Four
Katie Quesenberry picked up two quick kills for Messiah, with the teams tied 4-4. Quesenberry then combined with
Julia Bowen for a block as the teams continue trading points to a 7-7 tie. Stevenson then won six of the next seven points to take to control of the set, leading 13-8. Messiah fought back, with kills from
Julia Bowen,
Sydney Wolfe,
Makenzie Adams, and
Katie Quesenberry helping to tie the set 15-15. However, Stevenson responded well, building their lead back to five points, at 21-16. Quesenberry, Bowen, and Wolfe all added one final kill each, but the Mustangs put the set away, winning 25-20.
