No. 8 Women’s Soccer Set to Host Sectional Weekend

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The eight-ranked Messiah University women's soccer team is set to host the Sectional Weekend of the DIII Women's Soccer NCAA Tournament this Friday and Saturday. The Falcons will play the twenty-third ranked Knights of Calvin University on Friday, Nov. 21 at 1:30 p.m. The first matchup will feature No. 1 WashU and No. 18 MIT at 11:00 a.m. The winners of each matchup will play in the Sectional Final on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 1:00 p.m.
 
Ticket Information
Fans should note that tickets must be purchased to attend an NCAA Tournament game. At Messiah ticket purchases are cash only. The prices for tickets are: Adults $6, Seniors (65+) and Students $3, Children (3-12) $2. All Messiah Students with a valid ID can go to the game for free.

No. 8 Messiah University Falcons

21-2 Overall Record, MAC Commonwealth Champions

The Falcons enter the sectional weekend with a 21-2 overall record. The Falcons started the season with an 11-game winning streak.  The Falcons then lost two of their next three games, with the losses coming to No. 17 Rowan and Penn St. Harrisburg. The Falcons bounced back, winning the final seven games of the season, including a 4-0 win over Stevenson University in the MAC Commonwealth Championship game. The Falcons are 13-1 this season on Shoemaker Field and have outscored opponents 44-3 at home this season.
 
The Falcons opened the NCAA Tournament with a 6-1 win over the University of Southern Maine. Brittany Laird and Addi Martin each scored two goals for the Falcons in the win. In the second round, Hannah Adair scored a goal in the eighth minute to give the Falcons an early 1-0 lead. Ava Wert made five saves throughout the game to earn the shutout and a trip to the Sweet Sixteen.
 
The Falcons enter the sectional weekend with one of the top overall units in the country. The Falcons offense ranks 17th in total points (187), 18th in goals (67), 18th in assists (53), 18th in shots per game (22.22), 27th in points per game (8.13), and 28th in scoring offense (2.91 goals per game). The Falcons defense also was one of the strongest groups in the country, ranking fourth with a .783 shutout percentage and second in goals-against average (.261).

No. 23 Calvin University Knights

16-4 Overall Record, MIAA Conference Champions

The Knights enter the Sectional Weekend with a 16-4 overall record. The Knights opened the season with a 3-4 record with losses to three top 15 teams. The Knights then finished the season strong with 11 straight wins, including a 2-1 win over Hope in the MIAA Conference Championship game to earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Knights are 5-3 on the road this season.
 
As one of the hottest teams entering the tournament the Knights defeated Penn St. Behrend, 1-0 in the First Round to advance to the second round. The Knights then defeated Illinois Tech in the Second Round, 2-1 in overtime to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. Illinois Tech scored the first goal, but the Knights tied the game in the second half to force overtime. Mikaela Waroway scored the game-winner for the Knights in the 96th minute. Kalex Dodge also made nine saves in goal for the Knights.
 
The Knights head into the Sectional Weekend 14th in the country with 7.30 corner kicks per game, 44th with 52 goals, 46th in scoring offense with 2.60 goals per game, and 56th with 135 total points. The Knights' defense has not forced many shutouts, but rank 52nd with a .851 save percentage and 68th in goals-against average (.748).

The Falcons and Knights have met only one time in program history. The Falcons defeated the Knights in penalty kicks in the 2006 Sectional Finals.

No. 1 WashU Bears

18-0-2 Overall Record, UAA At-Large

The Bears enter the Sectional Weekend as the top-ranked team in the country with an 18-0-2 overall record. The Bears opened the season with an 8-0-1 record in their first nine games, with the tie coming against Trine University. The Bears continued their great season with an 8-0-1 record in their final nine games. The Bears played seven ranked teams in their final nine games, with the tie coming against No. 7 the University of Chicago in the season finale. The Bears are 10-0-1 this season on the road.
 
The Bears cruised to a 7-0 win over Wilmington College in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bears used seven different goal scorers and rattled off 23 shots on goal to advance to the second round. The Bears then rolled to a 5-1 win over North Central in the Second Round. The Bears led 1-0 at the half and then scored four unanswered goals in the second half to earn the 5-1 win.
 
The Bears ranks as one of the top overall units in the country. The Bears offense ranks third in shots per game (24.65), sixth in scoring offense (3.95 goals per game), sixth in shots on goal per game (12.45), seventh in total goals (79), seventh in points per game (10.65), eighth in total points (213), and 14th in assists (55). The Bears defense ranks ninth in the country with a .350 goals-against average and 23rd with a .650 shutout percentage.

The Falcons and Bears have met five times in program history. Messiah has a 1-1-3 overall record against the Bears. The Bears defeated the Falcons in penalty kicks in the 2023 Final Four in the last matchup. The last four games between WashU and Messiah have gone to penalty kicks.

No. 18 MIT Engineers

22-2-1 Overall Record, NEWMAC Champions


The Engineers enter the Sectional Weekend with a 22-2-1 overall record. The Engineers went 10-2 in their first 12 games of the season with the only losses coming against Brandeis and Tufts. The Engineers then went 10-0-1 in their next 11 games, including a 3-0 win over Springfield College in the NEWMAC Championship game to earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Engineers are 11-2 on the road this season.
 
The Engineers hosted the opening weekend and defeated Emmanual College 3-0 in the first round. The Engineers scored three goals in the first 17 minutes of the game to earn the win. The Engineers battled with Colby and scored their lone goal on a penalty kick in the 25th minute to earn a trip to the Sweet Sixteen.
 
The Engineers enter the Sectional Weekend as the top defensive team in the country. MIT ranks first in the nation with a .245 goals-against average and second with a .800 shutout percentage. The Engineers also rank as one of the top offenses in the country. MIT ranks sixth in total points (220), sixth in goals (82), 10th in assists (56), sixth in corner kicks per game (8.64), and 17 in scoring offense (3.28 goals per game).
