Wood’s Late Free Throws Push Women’s Basketball Past Warriors

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – On Sunday afternoon, the Messiah University women's basketball team used a pair of late free throws from EmmyFaith Wood to defeat the Warriors of Wisconsin Lutheran College, 55-54. The Falcons opened the game strong with a 21-16 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Falcons outscored the Warriors by one in the second to take a 33-27 lead into the half. Both teams scored 13 points in the third to keep the Falcons lead at six headed into the final quarter. The Warriors battled back in the fourth and took a one-point lead with 28 seconds remaining. EmmyFaith Wood though drew a foul and made both free throws with five seconds remaining in the game to give the Falcons the 55-54 win. Liv Monturo led the Falcons with 16 points and seven rebounds. EmmyFaith Wood totaled 14 points and six rebounds. Charlotte Milanesi added 11 points.

First Quarter
The Falcons opened the game strong with a 10-4 run to give the Falcons an early lead with 6:30 remaining in the first. EmmyFaith Wood led the Falcons with four points and Hope Cook added a three for the Falcons during the run. The Falcons continued their strong start with a 7-2 run to extend their lead to 11 with 3:20 remaining in the quarter. Liv Monturo led the Falcons with four points and Wood added three points for the Falcons during the run. After some back-and-forth play, the Warriors scored five-straight points to close the first quarter and reduce the Falcons lead to 21-16.
 
Second Quarter
The second quarter started slow with only seven points scored in the first five minutes. The Falcons scored their three points in the stretch off a Brooke Fenchel free throw and a Liv Monturo layup. The Falcons then went on a 7-2 run to push their lead to nine with 1:15 remaining in the half. Ainsley Bell started the run with a jumper and EmmyFaith Wood closed the run with a free throw. The Warriors closed the half with a 5-2 run to reduce the Falcons lead to 33-27 at the break.  
 
Third Quarter
The Falcons opened the first five minutes of the third with a 10-2 run to extend their lead to 14. Liv Monturo started the run with six-straight points and Charlotte Milanesi ended the run with four-straight points. The Warriors closed the third strong with an 11-3 run to pull back within six entering the final quarter.
 
Fourth Quarter
The defenses stepped up to start the fourth with the Falcons outscoring the Warriors, 5-4 in the first six minutes of the final quarter. Hope Cook hit a three and April Kauffeldt made a jumper for the Falcons during the stretch. The Warriors then went on a 10-2 run to take a 54-53 lead with 28 seconds remaining in the game. With five seconds remaining, EmmyFaith Wood drew a pair of free throws. Wood nailed both free throws to give the Falcons back the lead. The Warriors then missed a layup at the buzzer, and the Falcons earned the 55-54 win.

Liv Monturo led the Falcons with 16 points and seven rebounds. EmmyFaith Wood totaled 14 points and six rebounds. Charlotte Milanesi added 11 points. April Kauffeldt added three points and a game-high 12 rebounds. The Falcons shot 41.2 percent from the field and 30 percent from behind the arc. The Warriors shot 41.8 percent from the field and 31.3 percent from three.
