Falcons Sweep Chargers on Tuesday Night

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The No. 11 Messiah Men's Volleyball team hosted the Lancaster Bible College Chargers on Tuesday night. The Falcons swept the Chargers 3-0 with set scores of 25-20, 25-13, and 25-20. Alex Kagoro had 11 kills and Jacob Hamm had 10, hitting .786 and .714 respectively.

The Falcons are next in action when they travel to Huntingdon, Pa. to take on Juniata College on Friday, Feb. 7 at 7:00 p.m.

Action on the Court
First set action began with Brandon Sharp connecting with Alex Kagoro for a kill. The Chargers and Falcons traded the next six points before a service error and service ace gave the Chargers a 5-4 lead. A Charger error and service ace for Tyler McConnell gave Messiah the 6-5 lead. Messiah went on a four-point run with a pair of kills for Kagoro, an error for Lancaster Bible, and a kill by Jacob Hamm put Messiah up 11-7. Kagoro, Hamm, and Ryan Givens each had a kill as the Falcons increased their lead to 15-10. After two errors on each side of the net, the teams traded the next six points on kills, including a pair by Hamm and one from Todd Snyder to give the Falcons the 20-15 advantage. An error on each side of the net was followed by a pair of kills and a block for the Chargers to cut the deficit to 21-19 in favor of the Falcons. Brandon Sharp notched a setter dump for a kill that was answered with a kill for Lancaster Bible. A service error for the Chargers and a block by Sharp and Snyder gave Messiah the 24-20 lead. McConnell found Kagoro for the put-away point.

Todd Snyder notched the first point of the second set with a solo block. A Chargers kill and a kill for Jacob Hamm was followed by a pair of points for Lancaster Bible. A Chargers service error and an ace for Snyder gave the Falcons a 4-3 lead. Messiah then scored four straight with kills from Hamm and Tyler McConnell to go up 8-4 and force a Chargers timeout. The Falcons added three straight out of the timeout with a block by Brandon Sharp and Givens and kills by McConnell and Givens, increasing the lead to 11-4. With the score at 15-9, Sharp connected for back-to-back kills from Kagoro to add to the lead. The teams traded points before McConnell and Givens had a block to bring the score to 20-11. The Chargers had a kill before McConnell and Kagoro each had a kill and a pair of errors by the Chargers brought the score to 24-12. Lancaster Bible had one more kill before an error gave the Falcons the 25-13 set win, going up 2-0 in the match.

The Chargers were first to score in the third set with a kill before the Falcons scored five straight with a block by Todd Snyder and a kill by Alex Kagoro to go up 5-1. After trading a pair of points, the Falcons scored four straight with kills by Kagoro and Tyler McConnell and a pair of blocks by McConnell and Ryan Givens gave the Falcons an 11-4 lead, forcing a timeout by Lancaster Bible. Givens and McConnell combined for another block out of the timeout before the Chargers had a block. Momentum shifted back in the Falcons favor quickly with an error by the Chargers that was followed by a kill for Sean Gillespie and a service ace by McConnell gave the Falcons a 15-5 lead. Lancaster Bible scored a pair before an error gave the Falcons the ball. The Chargers scored three straight to cut the deficit to 16-10. They traded points before Cooper Henseler connected with Givens on back-to-back points to bring the score to 21-13 in favor of the Falcons. Gillespie had a solo block to bring the score to 24-19 before Henseler connected with Gillespie for the final point, giving the Falcons the 25-20 win and the match win 3-0.

Match Stats
Alex Kagoro led the Falcons with 11 kills and Jacob Hamm added 10. Kagoro hit .786 while Hamm hit .714.Brandon Sharp dished out 27 assists. Tyler McConnell and Kagoro each had seven digs with McConnell and Todd Snyder each adding a service ace. Snyder added two and a half blocks while Ryan Givens added four block assists.
