Baseball Uses 10-Run Inning to Down Golden Wolves

GRANTHAM, Pa. – On Friday afternoon, the Messiah University baseball team defeated the Golden Wolves of Alvernia University, 16-3 to open MAC Commonwealth play. The Falcons opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with three runs. The Golden Wolves answered back with two in the top of the third, but the Falcons scored three again in the bottom half to take a 6-2 lead. The Golden Wolves added a run in the of the fourth to reduce the Falcons lead to 6-3. After a scoreless fifth and top of the sixth, the Falcons poured on 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth to blow the game open and give Messiah a 16-3 lead. Neither team added a run throughout the rest of the game and the Falcons earned the 16-3 win. David Martinez led the Falcons with three hits, including a two-run home run, four RBIs, and three runs. Drew Hurst, Carter Reid, and Isaiah Parido each added a home run. Jason Long went seven innings on the mound for the Falcons, allowing three runs (two earned), on four hits, one walk, and a strikeout.
 
Up next, the Falcons travel to Reading, Pa. to finish off the three-game series against the Golden Wolves of Alvernia on Saturday, March 15 for a doubleheader. Game one's first pitch is schedule for 12:00 p.m.

Messiah 16, Alvernia 3
After Jason Long worked around a lead off single in the top of the first, the Falcons looked to get the bats going early. After a lead off strikeout, Dustin Isanogle reached second on a throwing error by the Alvernia short stop. Drew Hurst then singled to right field, but Isanogle was thrown out at home and the Falcons went scoreless in the bottom of the first.
 
Long threw another scoreless inning in the second and once again the Falcons offense looked to start the scoring. Nick Moyer led off the inning reaching first on an error by the Alvernia short stop. After Luke Ott was hit by a pitch, David Martinez hit a single to the pitcher, loading the bases for the Falcons. After a strikeout, Cristian Reyna drew a bases loaded walk to give the Falcons the 1-0 lead. The Falcons then scored two runs on two wild pitches to take a 3-0 lead after two innings of play.
 
The Golden Wolves scored two runs in the top of the third on an RBI ground out and a solo home run to reduce the Falcons lead to 3-2. The Falcons though answered back quickly in the bottom of the third with a lead off solo home run from Drew Hurst. After a strikeout Nick Moyer singled up the middle. After another strikeout, David Martinez hit a two-run home run to put the Falcons up 6-2 after three innings.
 
The Golden Wolves scored a run in the top of the fourth to reduce the Falcons lead to 6-3. Both team's pitchers started to settle into the game for a couple of innings, until the bottom of the sixth.
 
Carter Reid led off the bottom of the sixth with his first career home run to push the Falcons lead back to four. Cristian Reyna then hit a double down the left field line and Isaiah Parido was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. After the Reyna and Parido stole second and third, Dustin Isanogle drew a walk. Then Evan Wagaman, Nick Moyer, and Luke Ott earned free bases to give the Falcons three more runs and a 10-3 lead. The Falcons still with the bases loaded and one out, David Martinez hit a two RBI double into the right center gap to push the Falcons lead to nine. Carter Reid then hit an RBI single to left. After the single on Reid's stolen base, Martinez scored from third on the throw to second to extend the Falcons lead 11. The Falcons capped off the inning with a no-doubt two run bomb from Isaiah Parido to give the Falcons a 16-3 lead.
 
Neither team added a run throughout the rest of the game with Jason Long, Julian Butler, and Jadyn Martin each pitching scoreless innings for the Falcons to give Messiah the 16-3 win.

David Martinez led the Falcons with three hits, including a two-run home run, four RBIs, and three runs. Drew Hurst, Carter Reid, and Isaiah Parido each added a home run. Evan Wagaman totaled two hits with an RBI and a run scored. Dustin Isanogle, Nick Moyer, Cristian Reyna, and Landon Mark each added a hit. Jason Long went seven innings on the mound for the Falcons, allowing three runs (two earned), on four hits, one walk, and a strikeout. Julian Butler and Jadyn Martin each pitched scoreless innings out of the pen, with Martin striking out two batters.
