GRANTHAM, Pa. – On Friday afternoon, the Messiah University baseball team used a four-run first inning to propel them to a 5-2 win over the Mustangs of Stevenson University. The Mustangs got on the board early with a run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. The Falcons responded with four runs in the bottom of the first on a two-RBI single from
Drew Hurst and a two-run home run from
Evan Wagaman to give the Falcons a 4-1 lead. With the home run, Wagaman set the Messiah program record for career RBIs and tied the record for most home runs in a career. The Falcons added a run in the bottom of the fourth on a
Jarrett Gordon single to push the Falcons lead to 5-1. The Mustangs added a run in the top of the sixth on a solo home run, but the Falcons pitching did not allow anymore Mustang runs in the final three innings to earn the 5-2 win.
Evan Wagaman led the Falcons with two hits, including a two-run home run, and two RBIs.
Drew Hurst tallied a hit, and two RBIs and
Jarrett Gordon had a hit and an RBI.
Jason Long earned the win, pitching six innings, allowing two runs on eight hits, a walk, and five strikeouts.
Up next, the Falcons travel to Owings Mills, Md. to take on the Mustangs of Stevenson University in a doubleheader to complete the season three-game series. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
Messiah 5, Stevenson 2
The Mustangs opened the game strong with a run in the top of the first on a fielder's choice to give Stevenson the early lead.
The Falcons though looked to answer the Mustangs early run in the bottom of the first.
Isaiah Parido led off the inning reaching first on a hit by pitch.
Dylan Beard followed the hit by pitch with a single and to put runners on the corners with no outs. After Beard stole second,
Drew Hurst hit a two-RBI single to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead.
Evan Wagaman then drilled a two-run home run to left field to push the Falcons lead to 4-1. With the home run Wagaman tied Chris Heisey's program record for most career home runs with 23. With the two RBIs though, Wagaman broke the program record with his 130th career RBI.
The two teams then went scoreless for the next two and a half innings, with
Jason Long throwing three straight scoreless innings after giving up a run in the first.
The Falcons looked to break the scoring drought in the bottom of the fourth and
Luke Ott led off the inning reaching on an error. After advancing to second on a passed ball, and then to third on a
Dustin Isanogle ground out, Ott scored on an RBI single from
Jarrett Gordon to push the Falcons lead to 5-1.
The Mustangs added another run in the top of the sixth on a solo home run, but neither team added a run the rest of the way and Falcons earned the 5-2 win.
