Early Offense Leads Falcons Past Mary Washington

GRANTHAM, Pa. – On Tuesday afternoon, the Messiah University baseball team used a flurry of early runs to defeat the Eagles of the University on Mary Washington, 12-2. The Falcons started the game strong with two runs in the first to take an early lead. The Falcons then scored four runs in the second, with a Jarrett Gordon two-run home run off the foul to put the Falcons up 6-0. The Falcons added two more runs in the fifth and the sixth to extend their lead to 10-0. Both teams scored two runs the rest of the way to give the Falcons the 12-2 win. Jarrett Gordon led the Falcons with two hits, including a two-run home run, and two RBIs. Isaiah Parido and Dylan Beard totaled two hits and two RBIs each. Matt Luchovick and David Martinez each added two hits. Zachary Harris earned the win and pitched seven strong innings, allowing three hits and striking out nine batters.
 
Up next, the Falcons travel to Chester, Pa. to take on the Pride of Widener University on Friday, April 25 at 3:30 p.m.

Messiah 12, UMW 2
After a scoreless top of the first, the Falcons' bats look to open the scoring in the bottom of the first. After a strikeout, Jarrett Gordon ripped a double to left field. Drew Hurst then followed the double with an RBI triple down the right field line to give the Falcons the 1-0 lead. After Evan Wagaman reached on an error by the Eagles' catcher, Dylan Beard hit a sacrifice fly to center to give the Falcons a 2-0 after the first inning of play.
 
After another quick inning from Zachary Harris on the mound, the Falcons' bats stayed red hot in the bottom of the second. With one out, David Martinez started the rally reaching on an error. Nick Moyer then doubled down the left field line to put runners on second and third with one out. Isiah Parido then ripped a two-RBI triple down the right field line to extend the Falcons lead to four. Jarrett Gordon then hit a line drive down the left field line that hit the foul pole for a two-run home run to give the Falcons a 6-0 lead through two innings.
 
After a scoreless third, the Falcons looked to add to their lead in the bottom of the fourth. After a fly out, Jarrett Gordon reached first on walk and then advanced to second on a throwing error by the Eagles pitcher on a pick off attempt. After a fly out, Evan Wagaman ripped an RBI double to left to push the Falcons lead to 7-0. Dylan Beard then hit an RBI single to give the Falcons a 8-0 lead after four innings.
 
After another scoreless inning from Harris on the mound, the Falcons looked to keep adding to their lead in the bottom of the fifth. Matt Luchovick led off the inning with a single into left field. David Martinez then hit a single to right, but Luchovick was thrown out at third. After a pop out, the Falcons reached on three walks and a hit by pitch, with Drew Hurst and Evan Wagaman both earning RBI walks to push the Falcons lead to 10-0.
 
With two outs in the top of the sixth, the Eagles got their first hit of the game to end the no-hit bid from Zachary Harris, but Harris got out of the inning to hold onto the shutout.
 
Both teams added two runs the rest of the way with Jarrett Gordon hitting an RBI ground out and David Martinez hitting an RBI single to give the Falcons the 12-2 win.
