SALISBURY, MD. - On Thursday afternoon, the Messiah Softball team dropped a road match to No. 10 ranked Salisbury University. The Falcons were unable to get their bats going against the top pitcher for the Seagulls, while Salisbury used collective hitting to best the Falcons on their home field.
Hannah Dyer,
Fallon Feaser, and
Kandice Schlabach were the lone players to grab a hit, while all three Falcons pitchers Feaser,
Kelli Durbin, and
Maggie Chinnadurai attempted to stall the Seagulls offense.
Up Next:
The Falcons will travel to Widener University for a potential playoff No. 1 clinching MAC Commonwealth series on Saturday, April. 26th.
How It Happened:
The Falcons couldn't get a rhythm going offensively through the first two innings, but
Fallon Feaser was sound in the circle holding off the Seagulls bats for as long as she could. Unfortunately for the Falcons, Salisbury would only be tamed for so long as their bats were finally able to strike against Feaser in the bottom of the third. The Seagulls used four straight hits to score the first two runs of the game. Still sitting at one out,
Kelli Durbin entered hoping to stop the rally. Despite striking out her first batter, one more single allowed Salisbury to hold a 3-0 lead heading into the fourth.
Messiah had life to open the inning as lead off batter
Hannah Dyer secured a double to right field. However, despite our first batter being put in scoring position, the Falcons would get retired 1-2-3 to close the inning still trailing by three. Following a quick inning from Durbin in the circle, the Falcons were hoping to back up their pitcher and put one on the board in the top of the fifth.
The Falcons however, were still struggling to connect their bats to the ball as an three up three down inning allowed the Seagulls to feel confident heading into the home stretch of the game. In what was a pivotal inning to strike, the Falcons fell victim to a momentum swing with the Seagulls opening up the game with a three run inning to take a commanding 7-0 lead. From that point on it seemed to be the Seagulls day with nothing going in Messiahs favor.
After a scoreless inning from both teams, the Falcons had one last hope in the top of the seventh to pull off what would be a great comeback. Both Feaser and
Kandice Schlabach did all they could both grabbing back-to-back singles to put a runner in scoring position for only the second time today, but Salisbury worked themselves out the inning to blank the Falcons for their first scoreless game of the season.
