Dominant Offense Propels Falcons Past Eagles

ST. DAVID'S, Pa. – The No. 25 Messiah Women's Lacrosse team traveled to Eastern University on Wednesday afternoon to take on the Eagles. The Falcons walked away with a 19-1 victory that included six goals for Hayley Lettinga and three goals and an assist for Jordan Lewicki. Messiah had 10 goal scorers in the win.

Messiah will continue their road trip when they return to action on Saturday, April 12 at Albright College. The Falcons will take on the Lions at 1:00 p.m.

First Quarter
The Falcons were quick to strike as Katie Bukiewicz earned the opening draw control and Hannah Gawne found the back of the net just 30 seconds into the contest. The next draw control went to Emma Hagg and after Bukiewicz missed just wide Hayley Lettinga fired a shot off the post that was recovered by Eastern. Eastern was unable to put together an offense and the Falcons scored their second as Jordan Lewicki connected with Lettinga for the 2-0 lead. Over the next five minutes, Annalise Keitel fired a shot off the post and Hannah Gawne had a shot blocked as the Falcons caused two turnovers for the Eagles and kept them from registering a shot. After a caused turnover and ground ball for Riley Lewicki, Annalise Keitel connected with Jordan Lewicki to bring the score to 3-0 in favor of the Falcons with 5:26 to play in the first quarter. A caused turnover and ground ball for Lettinga led to a Falcons possession that resulted in Lettinga's second goal. A minute later, Lettinga recovered her own shot that was saved by the Eastern goalie and found the back of the net on the second chance shot to give the Falcons a 5-0 lead with a first quarter hat-trick for the senior. Messiah took a 6-0 lead into the second quarter after Grace Pettitt found Jordan Lewicki for Lewicki's second goal of the quarter.

Second Quarter
The second quarter started off with some back-and-forth play with each team registering a pair of turnovers. Regan Gillisse then picked up a third caused turnover for the Falcons and Grace Pettitt found Alina Bernal-Clark to increase the Falcons lead to 7-0. Katie Bukiewicz then scored an unassisted goal with 10:20 remaining in the first half. Three minutes passed before Messiah earned the first free position attempt of the game. Grace Pettitt was able to fire the free position shot past the Eastern goalie to bring the Messiah lead to 9-0. Eastern won the draw control and was able to fire a shot in goal to bring the score to 9-1 in favor of Messiah. A caused turnover and ground ball for Kayla Arnold led to a goal for Hayley Lettinga from Arnold. After Lettinga then missed a shot just wide, Leah Gaito was able to find the back of the net to give Messiah an 11-1 lead going into half time.

Third Quarter
Messiah earned their second free position attempt of the game about two minutes into the second half. The free position shot from Annalise Keitel was saved by the Eastern goalie before Jordan Lewicki recovered the ground ball and fired it into the net to give Messiah the 12-1 lead with her third goal of the game. A second saved shot by Keitel was recovered by Brynn Johnsen who fired a shot past the Eagles' goalie to make it 13-1. Two minutes later Grace Pettitt found Hayley Lettinga for a man-up goal. Lettinga secured the draw control and was able to find the back of the goal on the offensive end for her 40th goal of the season as Messiah took a 15-1 lead. The Falcons scored one more in the third when Kayla Arnold found Abby Welchans for her first goal of the season.

Fourth Quarter
Messiah was again quick to score with Leah Gaito netting her second of the game just over a minute into the final quarter. On the other end, Addyson Wagman caused a turnover that was recovered by Regan Gillisse before Annalise Keitel missed a shot wide. The Falcons earned a free position attempt following an Eagles' foul but did not convert it for a free position shot. Hannah Gawne fired a shot on goal but the Eastern goalie was able to make the save. With 3:52 remaining in the game, Katie Bukiewicz fired a shot just wide that the Falcons recovered. Hannah Gawne then found Bukiewicz for the goal to bring the score to 18-1. Messiah netted one more goal when Annalise Keitel found Kayla Arnold for her first goal of the season.

Stats
Hayley Lettinga led the Falcons with six goals while Jordan Lewicki added three goals and an assist. Katie Bukiewicz and Leah Gaito each added a pair of goals with Grace Pettitt adding a goal and a team high three assists. Emma Hagg led all players defensively with seven draw controls, six caused turnovers, and seven groundballs.
