Baseball Drops Game One of Championship Series to Spartans

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Messiah University baseball team fell to the Spartans of York College, 9-4 in game one of the MAC Commonwealth Championship Series. After three and a half scoreless innings, the Falcons added two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. The Spartans though responded with four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. The Spartans then added another run in the top of the sixth to increase their lead to 5-2. The Falcons looked to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh with a run to reduce the Spartans lead to two. The Spartans answered again with their second four-run inning to take a 9-3 lead. The Falcons could only add one run in the bottom of the eighth and the Spartans held them scoreless in the ninth earn the 9-4 win. Dylan Beard and Nick Moyer led the Falcons with a hit and RBI each. Isaiah Parido added a hit, and two runs scored. Jarrett Gordon also added an RBI. Christian Foltz earned the start pitching five innings allowing four runs on four hits and eight strikeouts.
 
Up next, the Falcons host the Spartans in game two of the MAC Commonwealth Championship Series on Sunday, May 11 at 12:00 PM. If the Falcons win game two, the two teams will play game three shortly after game two for the MAC Commonwealth Championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
 
York 9, Messiah 4
After three and half scoreless innings, the Falcons looked to break the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth. Isaiah Parido led off the inning with the Falcons first hit of the game, a triple down the right-field line. Jarrett Gordon then followed the triple with a sacrifice fly to center field to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. After a strikeout, Evan Wagaman hit a triple to right field to get the Falcons a runner on third with two outs. Dylan Beard then ripped a single through the left side to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead through four innings.
 
The Spartans answered back with four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead.
 
After a scoreless bottom of the fifth, the Spartans added another run on a sacrifice fly to take a 5-2 lead through the top of the sixth.
 
After the Spartans went scoreless in the top of the seventh, the Falcons looked to get back on the board in the bottom of the seventh. After a pop out, Luke Ott doubled down the right field line to give the Falcons a runner on second with one out. After another pop out, Nick Moyer hit a clutch RBI double to left field to reduce the Spartans lead two headed into the top of the eighth.
 
The Spartans added four more runs on four hits in the top of the eighth to take a 9-3 lead.
 
The Falcons looked for a late rally in the bottom of the eighth. Isaiah Parido led off the inning with a walk and then advanced to second on a passed ball. After a Jarrett Gordon walk, Drew Hurst hit into a fielder's choice, but a Spartans throwing error on the double play attempt allowed Parido to score and reduce the Spartans lead to 9-4. The Falcons did not add any more runs, and the Spartans took the five-run lead into the ninth.
 
Both teams went scoreless in the ninth and the Spartans earned the game one win, 9-4.
