ASHLAND, Va. – On Sunday afternoon, the Messiah University baseball team earned their first Regional Championship and appearance in the NCAA Super Regional with a 9-2 win over Methodist University Monarchs. The Monarchs got off to a strong start with a two-run first inning to take the early lead. The Falcons though responded in the bottom of the second with a grand slam from
Isaiah Parido to give the Falcons a 4-2 lead through two innings. After two and a half scoreless innings, the Falcons added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two-RBI double from
Dylan Beard to push the Falcons lead to 6-2. After two more scoreless innings, the Falcons added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 9-3 lead.
Trey Harper pitched a scoreless inning in the top of the ninth to give the Falcons the 9-2 win and the first trip to Super Regionals in program history.
Isaiah Parido led the Falcons with two hits, including a grand slam, and four RBIs.
Luke Ott also tallied two hits, and a run scored.
Dylan Beard added a double and two RBIs.
Up next, the Falcons begin the three-game Super Regional series in Salisbury, Md. against No. 8 Salisbury University on Friday, May 23 at 12:00 p.m.
Messiah 9, Methodist 2
The Monarchs in the top of the first got on the board with a two-RBI single to take an early 2-0 lead.
After
Jason Long worked around a jam in the top of the second, the Falcons looked to answer the early Methodist run in the bottom of the second. With one out,
Luke Ott singled through the right side. After a pop out,
David Martinez and
Dustin Isanogle both worked walks to load the bases for the Falcons.
Isaiah Parido then ripped a line drive to right that went over the fence for a grand slam to give the Falcons a 4-2 lead.
After two and half scoreless innings, the Falcons looked to extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth.
Isaiah Parido and
Jarrett Gordon led off the inning with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second with no outs.
Drew Hurst then got the sacrifice bunt down, but the throw from the Methodist catcher pulled the first basemen off the bag and the Falcons loaded the baes with no outs. After a strikeout,
Dylan Beard hit a two-RBI double off the left-field wall to push the Falcons lead to 6-2. The Falcons could not add any more runs and took the four-run lead into the sixth.
After a pair of scoreless innings, the Monarchs looked to try cut into the Falcons lead. The Monarchs got the first two runners on base, but
Trey Harper forced a fly out and a 6-4-3 double play to get the Falcons out of the jam headed to the bottom of the eighth.
The Falcons looked to add more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Nick Moyer led off the inning with a hit by pitch and then
David Martinez reached first on an error by the Monarchs. After a
Dustin Isanogle sacrifice bunt,
Isaiah Parido reached on a walk to load the bases for the Falcons.
Jarrett Gordon then was hit by a pitch, scoring a run for the Falcons, and extending their lead to 7-2. After a fly out,
Evan Wagaman ripped a ground ball to short, and the Monarchs short stop could not field it cleanly and the Falcons added two more run to take a 9-2 lead headed into the ninth.
Trey Harper worked around a two-out single and struck out the final batter of the game to give the Falcons the 9-2 win and their first trip to Super Regionals in program history.

Trey Harper finished off the game with two scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out two batters.
