Offensive Surge Leads Men’s Soccer over Chargers

GRANTHAM, Pa. – On Monday evening, the Messiah University men's soccer team used a five-goal game to defeat the Chargers of Lancaster Bible College, 5-0. The Falcons opened the game strong with a Kyle Spodnik goal in the 17th minute to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The Falcons added to their lead in the 23rd minute with a goal from Davis Pagett from Ethan Gregory. The Falcons continued on the offensive in the second half with the second goal of the game by Pagett from Patrick Lee to extend the Falcons lead to three in the 53rd minute. The Falcons controlled possession for most of the rest of the game with Grant Shreiner and Ethan Quadrini scoring late goals to give the Falcons the 5-0 win.
 
Up next, the Falcons host the Eagles of the University of Mary Washington on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 6:00 p.m.

First Half
The Falcons looked to get on the board early in the game with a strong offensive pressure to start. Davis Pagett got an early shot on goal, but the Chargers goalkeeper made the save to keep the game tied. The game would not be tied for long as Kyle Spodnik scored the opening goal in the 17th minute to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The Falcons looked to add another in the 23rd minute. Matt Griffin started the play with a steal in the midfield and short pass to Ethan Gregory just ahead of the midfield line. Gregory then sent a long, low through ball to Davis Pagett, who took a couple dribbles and ripped a shot into the back of the net to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead. The Falcons got three shots on goal for the remaining time in the first half, but the two shots from Elijah Perry and the one shot from Grant Shreiner were all saved to keep the game at 2-0 headed into the break.
 
Second Half
The Falcons continued to push the pace in the beginning of the second half. After forcing a Charger turnover, the Falcons quickly went on the counterattack. Davis Pagett got the ball and quickly passed to Patrick Lee as the Falcons had numbers headed into the attacking third. Lee dribbled towards the right corner of the box and sent a low through ball into the box, back to Pagett. Pagett then ripped a shot into the back of the goal to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead. The Falcons controlled possession for most of the rest of the game, but could not add another goal, until Grant Shreiner scored a goal in the 86th minute to give the Falcons a 4-0 lead. The Falcons added another goal in the 87th minute on a great individual play from Ethan Quadrini to give the Falcons the 5-0 win.
 
Stats
Davis Pagett led the Falcons with two goals. Ethan Quadrini, Grant Shreiner, and Kyle Spodnik each scored a goal for the Falcons. Ethan Gregory and Patrick Lee each dished out an assist. The Falcons totaled 27 shots with 13 shots on goal. The Chargers tallied five shots with one shot on goal. The Falcons earned four corner kicks to the Chargers one. Kessler Forrest earned the shutout win in goal for the Falcons and made one save.
