Sarago’s Goal Leads No. 1 Women’s Soccer Past Hornets

GRANTHAM, Pa. – On Tuesday evening, the top-ranked Messiah University women's soccer team used a second half goal from Lexi Sarago to defeat the Hornets of the Shenandoah University, 1-0. The Falcons offense controlled most of the possession in the first half, but three of the Falcons shots were saved, a shot hit the post, and the crossbar to keep the game scoreless at the break. The Falcons took the lead in the second half on a long-range curler from Lexi Sarago in the 56th minute. Both teams prevented any more goals and the Falcons earned the 1-0 win.
 
Up next, the Falcons host the Nittany Lions of Penn St. Abington on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 7:00 p.m.
 
First Half
The Falcons started on the attack early, with an Addi Martin shot, but the ball hit the crossbar and scored remained tied. The Falcons continued the pressure with a Mia Libby shot on goal, but the Hornets goalkeeper made the save to the game scoreless in the 20th minute. Just a minute later, Hannah Adair ripped a shot, but the shot ringed off the post to keep the Falcons off the board. The Falcons got two more shots on goal with Adair and Alayna Williams sending shots on the net, but each shot was saved by the Hornets' goalkeeper to keep the game tied at zero going into the break.
 
Second Half
The Falcons opened the second half looking to break the scoreless tie. The Falcons brought the ball into the attacking third and after attempting to play the ball of the right side of the field, the Falcons quickly regrouped and switched the field. Lydia Ring, Tahlia Lloyd, and Ella Lent-Koop all combined for some quick passes and then Lent-Koop passed it to Lexi Sarago about five yards outside of the box. Sarago took a couple of dribbles and ripped a curler in the top-right corner to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The Falcons had many chances on goal from Kenzie Derstine, Bailie Dull, Brittany Laird, Ella Lent-Koop, and Addi Martin, but each shot was saved to give the Falcons the 1-0 win.
 
Stats
Lexi Sarago scored the lone goal for the Falcons. The Falcons totaled 23 shots with 10 shots on goal. The Hornets totaled four shots with no shots on goal. The Falcons earned six corner kicks to the Hornets' three. Ava Wert earned the shutout win in goal for the Falcons.
