Late Goal Lifts No. 3 Blue Jays Over Field Hockey

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Messiah Field Hockey team traveled to Baltimore, Md. for a Wednesday evening game against the Blue Jays of No. 3 Johns Hopkins University. The teams remained scoreless through the first three quarters before the Blue Jays placed one in the back of the cage early in the fourth and the Falcons were unable to answer. Chelsea Carpenter and Ellie Lefever each registered a shot, and Joy Lippert made seven saves in goal.

The Falcons return to action on Saturday, Sept. 24, when Messiah travels to Geneva, N.Y. to take on the Herons of William Smith College at 12:00 p.m.

First Half
The Blue Jays demonstrated their high ranking by controlling much of the first half. A shot fired nearly three minutes into play was saved by Joy Lippert in goal for the Falcons. Two penalty corners for the Blue Jays proved ineffective as the Messiah defense prevented Johns Hopkins from firing a shot on either attempt. A third penalty corner for the Blue Jays resulted in a wide shot before time expired to end of the first period.

The second quarter was much the same with an early shot by Johns Hopkins that was saved by Joy Lippert. The Blue Jays fired a shot wide before their first penalty corner of the quarter. The Falcons defense again came out on top, preventing a shot from being fired. Joy Lippert picked up another save five minutes later before Johns Hopkins earned a second penalty corner in the final 15 seconds of the half. The Blue Jays were able to fire a shot but missed wide and the team remained scoreless heading into half time.

Second Half
Chelsea Carpenter was able to fire a shot around seven and a half minutes in but missed just wide. The Blue Jays earned another four penalty corners in the third quarter and fired six shots. Joy Lippert made three saves and the Falcons' defense blocked two.

Johns Hopkins was able to find the back of the cage on their second corner of the final quarter to take a 1-0 lead. Another penalty corner resulted in a shot on goal, but Joy Lippert made the save in goal. A late penalty corner for the Falcons looked to be the scoring opportunity Messiah was looking for but Ellie Lefever had her shot blocked and the Blue Jays earned the 1-0 win.

Stats
Joy Lippert made seven saves in goal for the Falcons. Chelsea Carpenter and Ellie Lefever each registered a shot for the Falcons.
