Falcons Sweep Blue Jays In Home Opener

GRANTHAM, Pa. – On Thursday evening, the Messiah Women's Volleyball Team swept the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown College, winning in three sets (25-14, 25-15, 25-18) in their 2025 home opener. In set one the Falcons started hot, winning the first six points. The Falcons didn't lay off the gas, extending the lead to as high as 11 points, taking the set 25-14. Set two started out even, with the teams' trading points to a 10-10 tie. A kill from Cynthia Boller and three straight kills from Sydney Wolfe gave the Falcons a 14-10 advantage. They kept that lead for the remainder of the set, taking it 25-15. Messiah kept the momentum going in the third set, jumping out to a 10-4 lead. The Falcons lead would get as high as 11 points at 20-9. The Blue Jays went on a small run with the Falcons at 24, but couldn't complete the comeback, dropping the set 25-18 and the match three sets to zero. Cynthia Boller led the Falcons with 16 kills. Sydney Wolfe added 10 kills. Makenzie Adams had nine kills and 17 digs.

Up next, the Falcons host Stockton University and Misericordia University for a tri-match on Saturday, Sept. 6.
 
Set One
The Falcons started the set firing on all cylinders, with kills from Makenzie Adams, Sydney Wolfe, and Leah Youtzy giving the Falcons an early 6-0 lead. Elizabethtown got on the board to make it 6-1, but two more kills from Adams and two kills each from Katie Quesenberry and Cynthia Boller extended the Falcons lead to 13-3. A service error from Messiah and a Blue Jay ace sparked a small run from Elizabethtown, but three more kills from Cynthia Boller halted the Blue Jays momentum. Up 17-10, the offense kept firing, with kills from Leah Youtzy, Sydney Wolfe, Katie Quesenberry, and Cynthia Boller closing out the first set, 25-14.
 
Set Two
The two teams traded points early to start the second set. After a service ace from Leah Youtzy and kills from Katie Quesenberry and Sydney Wolfe, the Blue Jays held a 5-4 lead. Elizabethtown then won the next two points to extend the lead to three, but three straight Cynthia Boller kills tied the set at 7-7. After the two sides traded a few more points the Falcons led 11-10. Sydney Wolfe then scored three straight kills, followed by a service ace from Hannah Thomas to extend the lead to 15-10. The Falcons didn't look back, keeping a comfortable lead the rest of set behind kills from Leah Youtzy, Sydney Wolfe, Cassidy Dell, Makenzie Adams, and Cynthia Boller, winning the set 25-15.
 
Set Three
A block from Sydney Wolfe and Leah Youtzy to start the third set kept the Falcons momentum going. Wolfe added a kill, and Youtzy had a service ace to give the Falcons an early 3-1 lead. Hannah Thomas added a kill, and Erin Eby had a service ace of her own to push the lead to 6-2. Makenzie Adams, Katie Quesenberry, and Cynthia Boller all added kills, with the Messiah lead now at 10-4. The Falcons offense continued pushing, with two more kills each from Boller and Adams, plus kills from Sydney Wolfe and Leah Youtzy giving Messiah a 20-9 lead in the deciding set. After a few Blue Jays errors and two more Cynthia Boller kills, the Falcons were one point away from the sweep. The Blue Jays, however, did not go down without a fight, winning three straight points to make the score 24-18. Messiah then got the final point off a Sydney Wolfe kill, taking the match in straight sets.
 
Stats
Cynthia Boller led the Falcons with 16 kills. Sydney Wolfe added 10 kills. Makenzie Adams had nine kills and 17 digs. Cassidy Dell had 38 assists and 11 digs. Hannah Thomas had 12 digs, and Claire Marzolino added 10 digs and five assists. Leah Youtzy had five kills and three service aces.
