GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Messiah Athletics Department mourns the passing of Tyler Moody, a former Messiah Baseball player, at the age of 32. Moody attended Messiah from 2012-2016, graduating with a degree in sports management.

During his four seasons at Messiah, Moody pitched in 38 games with a 4-4 record. In his 57 innings pitched, Moody struck out 35 batters. Moody helped the Falcons reach the conference tournament in three of his four season, with a MAC Commonwealth Runner-Up during the 2016 season.

From Former Head Coach, Pat Lightle
Tyler's sudden passing has left the Messiah University baseball community in deep shock. Known for his unmistakable smile, humility, and ability to connect effortlessly with everyone, he was the kind of teammate who lifted others simply by being himself. Off the field, Tyler was devoted to his wife and their two young children whom he often described as his greatest joy. He carried his love for life, his faith and his exceptional character into the business world where he continued to impact countless people through his professionalism, generosity and wholehearted commitment to everything he pursued. Friends and teammates, remember him as some someone people naturally admired - an authentic leader, whose compassion and influence reached far beyond the field. Tyler's legacy lives on in the many lives he touched, and in the lasting imprint he leaves on all who will miss him dearly.

From the moment I stepped onto campus, I looked up to Tyler as a leader both on and off the field. His humility was a direct reflection of his relationship with Christ. Even when he wasn't playing, he made it his personal mission to better each and every pitcher on the staff through his guidance, encouragement, and support. Tyler was one of the hardest workers on the team, constantly pushing us all to become the best versions of ourselves. He embodied servant leadership in every aspect of his life, and that mindset carried far beyond baseball.

Tyler loved his wife and two daughters more than anything on this earth. His dedication and commitment to them continue to inspire me to strive to be a better husband and father someday. I am incredibly blessed to have known Tyler so closely, and I know his legacy will live on through his family and through every Messiah Baseball player, past and present. Psalm 91 was his favorite chapter, and it has brought me great peace and comfort during this difficult time. Please continue to keep his wife and daughters in your prayers.

Tyler Moody was Coach Lightle's first recruit for the 2016 class.  And with being the first, I can't think of a better teammate or person that cared about the Messiah Baseball program more in his four years than Tyler.  He loved his coaches, he loved his teammates, he loved the game of baseball, and he loved Messiah.

Not every player leaves a legacy, but Tyler did.  I am honored to have continued to see his legacy continue after graduation in the role as a husband, a father of two, and an operations supervisor at Amazon. His life is a beautiful story of fulfillment in Jesus that I hope is of inspiration and continually shared in the Messiah community.

I can still picture Tyler coming off the mound in an April game our junior year. He had just shut down a top ten opponent in a pivotal spot and helped secure the biggest upset we'd land during our four years playing together. I remember how fired up yet composed he was, and I remember how incredibly excited our teammates were as they streamed off the bench to welcome him back to the dugout. They weren't just excited because of the stakes; they were excited because it was Tyler, a teammate who worked endlessly at his craft and cared immensely for those around him. Tyler supported his teammates thoroughly, and, when it was his time to be championed, the guys didn't miss an opportunity to show him the love he so often showed to others.

My favorite memories with Tyler, however, came well after the excitement of putting on a Messiah uniform were behind us. They were moments spent kicking back at a fellow teammate's lake house and diving deep during a virtual Bible study with guys we had played with over the years. It was during those moments that I not only saw reminders of the awesome guy Tyler was during our playing days, but a full look at the man he had become post-graduation, a man who took the same work ethic, devotion and passion he exemplified at Messiah and applied it to his faith, work and family. We love and miss you 12.
