Falcons Survive Late Run at Stevenson, Clinch Top Seed in Conference Tournament

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – On Saturday evening, the Messiah University women's basketball team survived a fourth quarter surge from the Mustangs of Stevenson University to earn the 49-39 win. The Falcons opened the game strong with a 16-6 lead after the first quarter. The Falcons outscored the Mustangs by five in the second to take a 27-12 lead at the half. The Mustangs outscored the Falcons by one in the third, but the Falcons still held a 14-point lead headed into the final quarter. The Mustangs made a final push to cut the Falcons lead to six, but the Falcons closed out the game with three unanswered points to earn the 48-39 win. Charlotte Milanesi led the Falcons with 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Hope Cook totaled nine points. Liv Monturo tallied eight points, nine rebounds, and three assists. EmmyFaith Wood also added eight points.

First Quarter
The Falcons started the game strong with a 7-3 run in the first four minutes to take an early lead. Hope Cook started the run with a three and Liv Monturo capped off the run with a layup. After some back-and-forth play the Falcons ended the first quarter with a 7-0 to extend their lead to 16-6 at the end of the first. The run was highlighted by a three from Ainsley Bell.
 
Second Quarter
The Falcons continued the momentum into the second with a. 9-2 run in the first four minutes to push their lead to 25-8. EmmyFaith Wood led the Falcons with six points during the run and Hope Cook added a three. The Mustangs outscored the Falcons 4-2 in the remaining six minutes to put the score at 27-12 at the half. Liv Monturo scored the lone basket for the Falcons in the final stretch of the second.
 
Third Quarter
The Falcons opened the third outscoring the Mustangs 7-6 in the first five minutes of the quarter to take a 34-18 lead. Hope Cook led the Falcons with three points, and Charlotte Milanesi and Liv Monturo each added a basket. The two teams then traded baskets for the remaining of the third with the Falcons holding a 40-26 lead headed into the final quarter. Ainsley Bell, Brooke Fenchel, and EmmyFaith Wood each scored a basket for the Falcons during the stretch.
 
Fourth Quarter
The Falcons opened the fourth outscoring the Mustangs, 5-2 to extend their lead to 45-28. Charlotte Milanesi scored all five points for the Falcons during the stretch. The Mustangs looked to comeback and went on an 11-0 run to reduce the Falcons lead to six with just under two minutes remaining in the game. The Falcons though scored the final three points to earn the 48-39 win. April Kauffeldt led the Falcons in the final stretch with two points.

Charlotte Milanesi led the Falcons with 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Hope Cook totaled nine points. Liv Monturo tallied eight points, nine rebounds, and three assists. EmmyFaith Wood also added eight points. April Kauffeldt also added a game-high 14 rebounds. The Falcons shot 35.2 percent from the field and 35.3 percent from behind the arc. The Mustangs shot 20.3 percent from the field and 12.5 percent from three.
