SWARTHMORE, Pa. – On Thursday afternoon, the Messiah University softball team fell in game one of the NCAA Regionals, 8-0 in six innings to the fourteenth-ranked Garnet of Swarthmore College. After a scoreless first, the Garnet got on the board first with three runs in the bottom of the second. After two more scoreless innings, the Garnet scored two runs in the fifth and three in the six to earn the run-rule 8-0 win.
Brielle Rosario and
Josi Tolentino each tallied a hit.
Fallon Feaser pitched five innings for the Falcons, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits and a strikeout.
Up next, the Falcons take on the loser of game two at 1:30 p.m. at Swarthmore College. If the Falcons win, they will play for a chance to head to the Regional Championship at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
No. 14 Swarthmore 8, Messiah 0: Final Six Innings
After a scoreless top of the first, the Falcons looked to put up a zero on defense. After a leadoff single and stolen base at second,
Rebekah Wiley threw out the Garnet base runner on a steal attempt at third to cut down the first runner in scoring position. Feaser then got the final two outs of the inning to keep the Garnet off the board.
After the Falcons went down in order in the top of the second, the Garnet scored three runs in the bottom of the second on a three-run home run to take a 3-0 lead.
After allowing the three runs,
Fallon Feaser settled into the game with two-straight scoreless innings to keep the Garnet at three runs.
The Falcons offense got their first base runner in the top of the fourth, with
Lucy Murphy reaching on an error, but the Falcons could not bring her home and the score remaining 3-0 heading into the fifth.
The Falcons offense got their first hit of the game in the fifth on a single by
Josi Tolentino, but the Falcons could not string together any more hits in the inning to keep the score at 3-0.
The Garnet scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 5-0 headed to the top of the sixth.
The Falcons got a one-out single from
Brielle Rosario, but the Garnet got two-straight ground outs to keep the Falcons off the board.
The Garnet scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn the run-rule, 8-0 win.
