ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Messiah Women's Volleyball team was back on the road today, traveling to take on the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown College, with the Falcons extending their win streak to seven games after completing a reverse sweep to win in five sets (28-30, 23-25, 25-21, 25-16, 15-9). The Falcons battled in two close sets to start the match, but found themselves in a hole, down 2-0. After a close third won by the Falcons, they used the momentum to convincingly win the fourth, forcing a fifth set. In the fifth, the Blue Jays took an early 6-2 lead, but the Falcons stormed back, taking the set 15-9 to win 3-2.
Makenzie Adams and
Clara Conner both had double-doubles for the Falcons. Adams had 20 kills and 22 digs, while Conner had 45 assists with 24 digs.
Kayla Batty added nine kills, 15 digs, and five service aces.
Up next, the Falcons are back in action at home when they begin the annual Messiah Invitational against No. 8 Carnegie-Mellon on Friday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m.
Set One
Makenzie Adams picked up an early kill, but the Blue Jays jumped out to a 6-2 lead.
Sydney Wolfe and
Leah Youtzy each added kill, but the Blue Jays lead grew to five, up 9-4.
Hannah MacCartney and
Kayla Batty both got in on the offense with a kill, but the Elizabethtown lead stayed at five points, at 12-7. The Falcons then got back in the set, going on a seven-point run to take the lead in the set, with
Makenzie Adams and
Sydney Wolfe both adding two kills. Wolfe added three more kills as the teams began trading points, with the set tied 20-20. Next,
Clara Conner and
Makenzie Adams each picked up kills late in the set to give Messiah a 24-22 lead, but two points from the Blue Jays tied the set. The teams then began to trade points, with
Makenzie Adams and
Hannah MacCartney each picking up kills, but the Blue Jays took the set, 30-28.
Set Two
Kayla Batty,
Sydney Wolfe,
Claire Marzolino, and
Makenzie Adams each picked up early kills in the set as the teams battled to a 7-7 tie. Adams,
Clara Conner, and
Hannah MacCartney all added a kill each shortly after, but the Blue Jays began to pull away, leading 15-12.
Kayla Batty added two kills as the set went on, with the Blue Jays still 19-15. The Falcons then got some momentum, with
Makenzie Adams picking up a kill and
Leah Youtzy dropping in an ace to make it 19-17, Elizabethtown. The Falcons continued pushing, with kills from
Hannah MacCartney,
Sydney Wolfe, and
Leah Youtzy tying the set late, 23-23. However, the Blue Jays would win the final two points to take the set and a commanding lead in the match.
Set Three
Sydney Wolfe tallied tow early kills and
Leah Youtzy added a kill, but Elizabethtown took a quick 7-3 lead. The Falcons fought back into the set, with
Kayla Batty picking up two aces, and
Makenzie Adams adding a kill, with the set tied 9-9.
Hannah MacCartney and
Sydney Wolfe then made some big plays for the Falcons as the two combined for a block, with MacCartney adding a kill and a solo block, while Wolfe picked up two more kills. Wolfe,
Leah Youtzy, and
Makenzie Adams all tacked on another kill each, with the teams tied 20-20 late in the set. The Blue Jays retook the lead 21-20, but a five-point run from the Falcons quickly ended the set with a 25-20 Falcons win to force a fourth. During the final stretch,
Makenzie Adams tallied two kills,
Leah Youtzy dropped in a service ace, and
Ellia Spang added one final kill.
Set Four
The Falcons used to momentum from the end of the third set to take a quick 4-0 lead in set four, with
Makenzie Adams picking up a kill and
Clara Conner dropping in an ace. Adams added another kill and
Sydney Wolfe picked up two kills, but the Blue Jays fought back, only trailing 8-7. However, the Falcons won 10 of the next 12 points to take hold of the set, leading 18-9. During this stretch,
Makenzie Adams totaled three kills, while
Kayla Batty,
Leah Youtzy,
Clara Conner, and
Sydney Wolfe each added one kill. Batty, Adams, and
Hannah MacCartney each picked up one more kill in the set, with the Falcons taking it 25-16 to force a deciding set five.
Set Five
Sydney Wolfe and
Hannah MacCartney joined forces for an early block in the fifth set, but the Blue Jays jumped out to a 6-2 lead. However, the Falcons stormed back with a seven-point run, while winning eight of the next nine points. During this stretch,
Kayla Batty tallied three kills, while
Leah Youtzy and
Sydney Wolfe combined for a block and each added a kill. Elizabethtown won the next two points to make it 10-9, Messiah, but one final five-point run from the Falcons gave them a 15-9 set victory, and a reverse sweep to take the match, 3-2. To end the set,
Makenzie Adams and
Leah Youtzy both tacked on kills, while
Kayla Batty dropped in two service aces.
