NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The No. 11 Messiah Field Hockey dropped a road game to No. 1 Christopher Newport 6-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Captains showed their power early, scoring just over a minute into play before taking a 2-0 lead in the first. They added a pair for a 4-0 lead at halftime before tallying a goal in each of the remaining quarters to earn the 6-0 win.
Ellie Lefever led the Falcons with three shots and one shot on goal.
Joy Lippert made nine saves in goal.
Messiah returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 12:00 p.m. when they host William Smith College on Anderson Field.
First Half
The Captains tallied a goal just 1:23 into the game, looking to prove their No. 1 ranking. The Falcons earned the first penalty corner of the game two minutes later.
Ellie Lefever fired a shot that missed just outside the post. The teams spent the next four minutes trading possession before a shot fired from Christopher Newport found the back of the cage and extended the lead to two. The Captains looked to continue their scoring efforts but the Falcons defense blocked a shot before
Joy Lippert made a save in cage for Messiah. The Falcons had a chance late in the corner to get on the board but the. Shot from
Addie Weiler missed just outside.
The Captains added two goals in the first six minutes of the second quarter to extend their lead to 4-0 with nine minutes to play in the first half. Neither team registered a shot as the score remained 4-0 in favor of Christopher Newport into halftime.
Second Half
The Falcons had an early penalty corner to open the second half but a shot from
Ellie Lefever was blocked by a Christopher Newport defender. At the other end of the field, the Captains fired a shot on goal that was saved by
Joy Lippert. The Captains tallied their fifth goal on a penalty corner two minutes into play. The Messiah offense was able to secure a second penalty corner that resulted in a shot from Lefever saved by the Captains goalie. Before Lippert made another save in goal for the Falcons. Lippert then added a pair of saves in 39th minute. Christopher Newport had a penalty corner opportunity as time expired, but the Messiah defense blocked the shot and the Captains lead remained 5-0 with one quarter remaining.
Aubrey Clark fired the first shot of the final quarter and missed just wide.
