Field Hockey Drops Double Overtime Battle at No. 23 Rowan

GLASSBORO, N.J. – The Messiah Field Hockey team traveled to No. 23 Rowan University on Wednesday night to take on the Profs. The Falcons tallied a goal just two minutes in to play when Lindsey Campione found Chelsea Carlisle to open the scoring. The teams played 36 minutes of scoreless field hockey before the Profs converted on a penalty corner opportunity to tie the score 1-1. As time expired, the score remained 0-0 and the teams headed to overtime. Rowan fired a pair of shots, with Joy Lippert making a save in the 65th minute and the Messiah defense blocking a shot in the 68th minute to force the teams into double overtime. The Profs were again able to convert on a penalty corner to earn the 2-1 win. Chelsea Carlisle led the Falcons with one goal on three shots while Lindsey Campione tallied an assist. Joy Lippert made three saves in goal.

The Falcons return to action on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 1:00 p.m. when they host Neumann University for homecoming to open conference play.

First Half
As mentioned, the Falcons struck early in the first quarter to take a 1-0 lead. The Falcons earned a penalty corner in the first minute and looked to get on the board but were unable to register a shot. Just over a minute later, Lindsey Campione found Chelsea Carlisle to put Messiah on the board and give the Falcons the early 1-0 lead. The teams battled back-and-forth for most of the first quarter, with Rowan earning the first penalty corner of the game at the 14-minute mark. The Profs tallied three penalty corners in the final minute, with a shot being blocked and a second shot missing wide while the Falcons maintained the 1-0 lead.

Rowan looked to get on the board with a shot in the 17th minute, but Joy Lippert made the save in goal for Messiah. The scene was much the same as the first quarter, with the play continuing back-and-forth without either team registering a shot. Naomi Lyter looked to extend the Messiah lead with a shot with just over a minute remaining in the quarter, but the Profs goalie made the save. Two late penalty corners for the Falcons resulted in a shot from Chelsea Carlisle that was blocked as Messiah held the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Second Half
Rowan earned three penalty corners in the first five minutes of the second half and tallied a shot on goal that was saved by Joy Lippert and a shot that missed wide. At the other end of the field, Chelsea Carlisle fired a shot just wide. In the 37th minute, Rowan earned a penalty corner and successfully converted the opportunity to notch the score 1-0 with 22 minutes remaining in the game. The Profs earned one more penalty corner in the quarter but were unable to register a shot.

In the fourth quarter, Caitlyn Weatherill fired a shot on frame that was saved by the Profs goalie before the rebound shot from Tayler Wielechowski missed just wide. The teams battled for the next five minutes before a penalty corner for the Falcons resulted in a shot from Ellie Lefever that was blocked by the Rowan defense before a put back shot from Alyssa Lewis was saved by the Rowan goalie. The Falcons earned a second penalty corner but could not convert. The Profs then tallied a pair of penalty corners with a shot wide to keep the score at 1-1. With just over a minute to play, the Falcons earned a penalty corner that resulted in a shot from Ellie Lefever. The Profs defense blocked the shot and the score remained 1-1 as the teams headed to overtime.

Overtime
Possession was traded between the Falcons and Profs for much of the overtime period. Rowan fired a shot on goal in the 65th minute but Joy Lippert made the save for Messiah. The Profs earned a penalty corner with two minutes remaining, but the Messiah defense blocked the shot and the score remained 1-1 as the Falcons moved to double overtime for the third time this season.

The Profs needed just 2:29 of the second overtime period before they tallied a goal on a penalty corner opportunity to earn the 2-1 win.

Chelsea Carlisle led the Falcons with one goal on three shots while Lindsey Campione tallied an assist. Joy Lippert made three saves in goal.
