No. 5 Women’s Soccer Falls in Early Season Top Five Matchup Against No. 4 Tufts

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – On Saturday morning, the fifth-ranked Messiah University women's soccer team fell to the fourth-ranked Jumbos of Tufts University, 5-1. The Jumbos jumped to an early two-goal lead with two goals in the first 16 minutes of play. The Falcons responded back with a goal in the 30th minute from Alayna Williams by Hannah Lashley to cut the Jumbos leads to one. The Jumbos added another goal just four minutes later to take a 3-1 lead at the break. The Jumbos tallied two more goals in the second half to earn the 5-1 win.
 
Up next, the Falcons host the fifteenth-ranked Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m. for their 2026 home opener.
 
First Half
The Jumbos looked for an early goal with a shot on goal in the second minute, but Ellie Ockrin made an early save to keep the Jumbos off the board. The Jumbos though continued on the attack and scored the opening goal in the 11th minute to take an early 1-0 lead. The Jumbos kept on the attack and added another in the 16th minute to take a 2-0 lead. In the 30th minute, the Falcons looked to cut the Jumbos lead in half. Alayna Williams scored a goal from Hannah Lashley to put the score at 2-1. The Jumbos though quickly responded with a goal in the 34th minute to extend their lead to 3-1. Tufts looked to add another goal to close out the first half, but Ockrin made another save to keep the score at 3-1 headed into the break.
 
Second Half
The Jumbos extended their lead to three with a goal in the 55th minute. The Falcons then started putting pressure on the Jumbos defense with two shots on goal from Brittany Hoffman and a shot from Addi Martin, but all three shots were saved to hold the score at 4-1 through the 70th minute. The Jumbos added another tally in the 80th minute to earn the 5-1 win.
 
Stats
Alayna Williams scored the lone goal for the Falcons. Hannah Lashley tallied an assist. The Falcons totaled 10 shots with five shots on goal. The Jumbos tallied 17 shots with 10 shots on goal. Tufts earned eight corners to Messiah's two. Ellie Ockrin started in goal for the Falcons and tallied five saves.
