GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Messiah Women's Volleyball team was back in action today for day two of the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic. On day two, the Falcons opened the day with a win over the University of Olivet in four sets (23-25, 25-13, 25-17, 26-24), before taking down the Warriors of Lycoming College in three sets (25-9, 27-25, 25-19), going a perfect 2-0 on the day to move to 3-1 for the season.
In game one, the Falcons dropped a close set one before dominating in the second set to even up the match. The Falcons kept up the pressure, easily taking the third set before winning a close fourth set in extra points to win the match, 3-1.
Makenzie Adams had a team-high 14 kills and 19 digs.
Clara Conner had 46 assists for the Falcons.
In game two, the Falcons played their most dominant set of the young season in the first, taking it 25-9. In a back and forth second set, the Falcons took it in extra points to take a commanding lead. The Falcons then took the third set to complete the sweep, going 2-0 on the day.
Makenzie Adams had 13 kills and eight digs.
Claire Marzolino had nine digs and four service aces.
Up next, the Falcons are back on Jordan Court in Hitchcock Arena for their home opener against Penn State Brandywine on Thursday, Sept. 10, at 7:00 p.m.
Game One: Messiah – 3, Olivet – 1
Set One
Leah Youtzy and
Sydney Wolfe picked up early kills to give Messiah a 2-1 lead, but Olivet would go on a five-point run to take control early, up 6-2. Messiah won eight of the next nine points to retake the lead, with
Kayla Batty picking up two kills and two service aces during this stretch.
Makenzie Adams also added a kill and
Katie Quesenberry picked up her 500th career kill to help give the Falcons a 10-7 lead. Adams added another kill and
Claire Marzolino dropped in a service ace, but Olivet battled back to tie the set, 12-12. A kill from
Leah Youtzy and a solo block from
Sydney Wolfe gave Messiah a 15-13 lead, but a four-point swing by Olivet to take a 17-15 lead followed to force a Messiah timeout. After the timeout,
Kayla Batty tallied three kills for Messiah, but Olivet still led by three, 21-18, forcing another Messiah timeout.
Katie Quesenberry picked up a kill out of the timeout, and
Makenzie Adams added two more kills to tie the set 22-22.
Sydney Wolfe tacked on a final kill in the set for Messiah, but Olivet took three of the final four points to win the set 25-23.
Set Two
Sydney Wolfe picked up the lone kill early in the set for Messiah as Olivet jumped out to a 4-1 lead. The Falcons responded with a four-point run started by a kill from
Kayla Batty. During the run
Courtney Wolf added a service ace, and
Leah Youtzy and
Katie Quesenberry combined for a block to give Messiah a 5-4 lead. Quesenberry added a kill for Messiahs as the teams began to trade points to a 7-7 tie. The Falcons began to pull away with another strong run, winning six straight points to take a 13-7 lead. During this stretch,
Kayla Batty added a kill and three service aces. An Olivet kill stopped the run to make it 13-8, but Messiah got right back on the front foot, winning the next four points after a kill from
Makenzie Adams, an ace from
Claire Marzolino, and a block from
Leah Youtzy and
Clara Conner.
Sydney Wolfe picked up two kills and
Makenzie Adams added another as the Falcons kept control, up 22-12 late in the set. Wolfe and Adams each added one final kill in the set, with Messiah taking the set 25-13 to tie the match.
Set Three
Two kills from
Leah Youtzy and a kill from
Sydney Wolfe helped the Falcons to an early 4-1 lead. Wolfe added a second kill,
Kayla Batty picked up two kills, and
Clara Conner added another as Messiah pushed to a 10-2 advantage. The Falcons continued to dominate the set, with two kills from
Katie Quesenberry and one kill from
Makenzie Adams pushing the Falcons lead to nine, up 13-4. Olivet tried to chip away, but kills from
Leah Youtzy,
Makenzie Adams, and
Katie Quesenberry helped maintain the Messiah lead at 20-15. Next,
Sydney Wolfe and
Leah Youtzy combined for a block and Wolfe picked up a kill to get Messiah within a point of winning the set.
Courtney Wolf then dropped in a service ace to win the set for Messiah, 25-17.
Set Four
Olivet came out firing to start the fourth, taking a 9-3 lead. Messiah responded with a four-point run to make it 9-7, with
Sydney Wolfe picking up a kill and
Erin Eby dropping in a service ace.
Makenzie Adams and
Leah Youtzy each picked up kills for the Falcons, but Olivet extended their lead to five points halfway through the set, up 16-11.
Leah Youtzy picked up two more kills and
Katie Quesenberry added a kill of her own, but Olivet kept their lead, up 21-15.
Kayla Batty tallied a kill and service ace to make it 21-17 before an Olivet kill pushed the lead back to five. The Falcons then went on a four-point run to get within one point at 22-21. During the run,
Katie Quesenberry tallied a kill,
Claire Marzolino dropped in a service ace, and
Makenzie Adams and
Leah Youtzy combined for a block. Adams and Youtzy both added kills quickly after, but Olivet led 24-23, looking to force a fifth set. However, one more kill each from Youtzy and Adams, plus a service ace from Adams, would give Messiah the set 26-24, and the match 3-1.

The Falcons jumped out to a 4-0 lead after a kill from

Makenzie Adams, and a double block from Youtzy and
Kayla Batty. Batty, Youtzy, and
Clara Conner all added kills as Messiah pushed the lead to five points, at 8-3.
Makenzie Adams,
Katie Quesenberry, and
Leah Youtzy all picked up a few more kills as the Falcons offense kept firing, with Messiah up 15-6 halfway through the set. The Falcons outscored Lycoming 10-3 the rest of the way, taking the first set 25-9.

Sydney Wolfe all added kills during this stretch, and Youtzy added two service aces.
Set Two
A block from
Hannah MacCartney and
Leah Youtzy helped give Messiah a 2-0 lead to start the set, but the Warriors responded with a five-point run to take the lead. The Falcons responded with a five-point run of their own to retake the lead, with
Hannah MacCartney picking up a kill, while
Leah Youtzy and
Kayla Batty added two kills each. Batty added two more kills and
Katie Quesenberry got in on the action, but Lycoming retook the lead, 13-11. The Falcons then went on another run, this time winning the next six points behind three kills from
Makenzie Adams, one kill from
Clara Conner, and two aces from
Claire Marzolino. Adams,
Leah Youtzy, and
Hannah MacCartney all quickly added another kill each, with the Falcons now up 20-15. However, the Falcons offense then went cold, with Lycoming chipping into the lead all the way to tying the set, 24-24.
Kayla Batty got a kill to get the offense back on the board, and
Makenzie Adams added a final kill enroute to a 27-25 set win for the Falcons.
Set Three
Makenzie Adams and
Sydney Wolfe both picked up and kills, and
Katie Quesenberry and
Kayla Batty combined for a block to give Messiah a 3-1 lead. Quesenberry and Adams then both added kills as the teams began to trade points to a 7-7 tie. However, the Falcons pulled away after three kills from
Makenzie Adams and an ace from
Clara Conner sparked a six-point run to give Messiah a 13-7 advantage. Next,
Sydney Wolfe picked up a kill, and
Leah Youtzy added a kill and service ace as Messiah led 16-10 halfway through the set. A four-point swing for the Warriors chipped away at the Messiah lead, but
Ellia Spang added a kill to give the momentum back to Messiah.
Claire Marzolino dropped in two straight service aces to restore the Falcons six-point lead, at 22-16, but three straight Lycoming points cut the lead in half. However, a block from
Katie Quesenberry and
Lexi Hetrick, which was followed by two kills from Hetrick, gave Messiah the set 25-19, and a sweep to end the Battlefield Classic.
