The 2022-23 season marks Joseph Saufley's fifth year as an assistant coach with the baseball program but his seventh year on the coaching staff after serving two years as a graduate assistant coach.
Saufley is a 2016 graduate of Messiah when as a senior, he led the MAC Commonwealth in home runs, RBI, total bases, and walks, and he was second in runs and slugging percentage. In the spring of 2018, Saufley earned his Master's of Higher Education with a concentration in College Athletics Leadership.
Saufley's superb senior year landed him his third-straight All-MAC Commonwealth honor as well as being named to the CoSIDA Academic All-American First Team for the second year in a row.
In addition to leading the MAC Commonwealth in many categories, Saufley's senior campaign led the Falcons in batting average (.351), runs (39), triples (3), home runs (9), RBI (40), total bases (94), slugging percentage (.610), walks (25), and on-base percentage (.445).
Saufley's junior season was just as strong as he recorded team-highs in average (.419), hits (54), triples (7, tied program-record), home runs (5), total bases (95), slugging percentage (.736), and on-base percentage (.464). During this season, Saufley also set a program-record with a 17-game hit streak.
