Falcons Go Undefeated at Kean University Tournament

Union, NJ - The Falcons finished undefeated at the Kean University Tournament as they swept the College of New Rochelle 3-0 (25-13, 25-8, 27-25), PSU-Behrend 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-18), Plymouth State University 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-17), and won three of four sets in their victory over Kean University 3-1 (28-26, 25-16, 23-25, 25-10). Jane Underman was named Player of the Tournament and Hannah Baumer was named Outstanding Player for Messiah. 

Match One: College Of New Rochelle 3-0 (25-13, 25-8, 27-25)
The Falcons started strong sweeping the Blue Angels of the College Of New Rochelle 3-0 (25-13, 25-8, 27-25) in the first match of the Kean University Tournament. 

The Falcons and Blue Angels played a competitive first set to start off. The Falcons put together a five point streak with kills by Jane Underman, Hannah Baumer, and a service ace from Brooke Gallagher to increase their lead to 15-8. The Blue Angels would respond with three points of their own. The Falcons responded immediately with a seven point streak from kills by Kristen Douglas, Taylor Hook, and an impressive three service aces by Jane Underman to increase their lead 22-11. Messiah held their lead and won the set off an attack error from the Blue Angels. 

The Blue Angels were overmatched in the second set as Messiah won the 25-8. The Falcons started with a lead and built on it throughout the set. Messiah only commited two errors compared to the Blue Angels six. The Falcons also capitalized off their scoring chances as they finished with a .478 compared to the Blue Angels -.043. 

The Falcons grinded out the third set with a 27-25 victory. Messiah used a team effort to capture the victory as they received kills from six different players. The Falcons trailed the entire set until two service aces by Jennifer Rusling and a kill by Emily Lelah gave the Falcons a 21-20 lead. Both teams exchanged scores until the Blue Angels commited an attack error and the Falcons Emily Buckwalter scored the final point and gave the Falcons the set and match victory.  



Match Two: PSU - Behrend 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-18)
The Falcons kept their momentum going into the second match of the Kean University Tournament as they swept the Nittany Lions of Penn State-Behrend 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-18). 

Messiah started fast and captured the lead early in the set and never gave the Nittany Lions a chance to catch up. The Nittany Lions started to make a comeback towards the end of the set as they went on a five point scoring streak to make the score 20-19 in the Falcons favor. Messiah outscored the Nittany Lions five to one the rest of the set and Brooke Gallagher finished the set with a kill and gave Messiah the victory.

The second set had the Falcons down 21-17 late in the match. Messiah battled back with a seven point scoring streak with kills from Kristen Douglas, Jane Underman, and errors by the Nittany Lions. PSU-Behrend commited 12 errors throughout the set. Tied at 24, Messiah scored the final two points of the set off a service error from PSU-Behrend and a kill by Kristen Douglas

Messiah trailed early in the set, but it would be the only time during the set. The Falcons had scoring streaks of four and five points to increase their lead. Messiah led 24-18 before a service error from the Nittany Lions gave the Falcons the set and match victory. Jane Underman finished the match with 12 kills and Emily Zellers finished with 18 digs. 

Match Three: Plymouth State University 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-17)

The Falcons swept Plymouth State University 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-17) in their third match of the Kean University Tournament.

Messiah trailed 5-4 early in the set before they went on a six point scoring streak with kills by Emily Buckwalter, Brooke Gallagher, and attacking errors committed by Plymouth State to give the Falcons a 10-5 lead. Plymouth State responded with a six point scoring streak of their own to reclaim the lead 11-10. Two service aces by Emily Zellers and attacking errors from Plymouth State created a five point scoring streak for the Falcons to give the Falcons a 16-13 lead. Both teams traded scores for the remaninder of the match and a kill from Emily Buckwalter gave Messiah the 25-10 first set victory.

The Falcons led 13-10 during the middle of the second set until Messiah put together a four and eight point scoing streak to defeat Plymouth State 25-11. Messiah committed only one error compared to Plymouth State's nine. The Falcons also capitalized off their scoring chances finishing with a .538 attacking percentage compared to Plymouth State's -.161.

Messiah won the third and final set 25-17 and finished with a match high 17 kills. A five point scoring streak in the middle of the set with a kill by Alyssa Vorbeck, a service ace from Emly Zellers, and attack errors by Plymouth State gave the Falcons a 18-12 lead. Messiah would hold on to their lead and score the match winning point off a Plymouth State attack error. The Falcons were led offensively by Emily Buckwalter who finished with 11 kills and Jane Underman led Messiah defensively with 12 digs.  



Match Four: Kean University 3-1 (28-26, 25-16, 23-25, 25-10)

The Falcons won three of four sets to defeat Kean University 3-1 (28-26, 25-26, 23-25, 25-10) in their final match. The victory capped off a 4-0 weekend for the Falcons at the Kean University Tournament and improved Messiah's record to 20-5. 

The Falcons and Kean battled to a 26-26 tied score in the first set of the match. An attack error committed by Kean and a kill by Alyssa Vorbeck gave Messiah the 28-26 victory. Messiah took the second set by a 25-16 score. The Falcons jumped out to an early lead with a five point scoring streak that was led by two kills by Alyssa Vorbeck and two kills by Jane Underman. The fifth point came from an attack error by Kean which gave the Falcons a 11-4 lead. The Falcons held on to their lead to win the second set.

Kean University came back strong to win the third set 25-23. The Falcons were down 24-23 when Kean's Kassie Hernandez delivered the final kill for the victory. The score was tied six times throughout this hard fought set. Messiah persevered in the fourth set and won 25-10 to win the match. The Falcons had a total of 16 kills in this set, committed one error, and finished with an impressive .625 attack percentage. Jane Underman finished with 22 kills while Hayley Cowoski finished with 19 digs.
