Falcons Finish 1-1 at Gettysburg Tri-Match

Gettysburg, PA – The Falcons finished 1-1 at the Gettysburg Tri-Match as the beat Muhlenberg College 3-2 (9-25, 25-22, 25-22, 19-25, 16-14) and lost to Gettysburg College 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-22). 

Match One: Muhlenberg College 3-2 (9-25, 25-22, 25-22, 19-25, 16-14) 
The Falcons started out slow in the first set of the match trailing the Mules 13-3. Messiah ended the Mules ten point scoring streak from a kill by Hannah Baumer to make the score 13-4 in the Mules favor. Muhlenberg outscored Messiah 12-5 the rest of the set with a kill by Joanne Josephson, which gave the Mules the first set victory.
 
After the Mules dominating first set victory, the Falcons came out strong in the second set and took a 10-5 lead with kills by Brooke Gallagher, Hannah Baumer, and Jane Underman. Muhlenberg battled back and evened the score at 12 a piece. The Falcons responded with a five point scoring streak with two attack errors committed by the Mules, a service ace by Danielle Weaver, and back-to-back kills from Jane Underman to go up 17-12. With Messiah leading 21-15, Muhlenberg battled back to make the score 23-22. A kill by Kristen Douglas and a service ace by Taylor Hook gave the Falcons the second set victory.
 
The third set was a back and forth contest which had 13 ties and six lead changes throughout the set. With the score tied at 21, two attack errors by the Mules and a service ace by Kristen Douglas gave the Falcons a 24-21 lead. A service error by the Falcons made the score 24-22 until Jane Underman laid down the final kill to give Messiah the third set victory.
 
The Falcons started fast in the fourth set and led the Mules 9-2. Muhlenberg tightened up their play and tied the score at 16. The Mules jumped out to a 24-19 lead when a kill by Katherine Boll gave Muhlenberg the fourth set victory.
 
The fifth and final set of the match was a thriller. Both teams lost and captured the lead throughout the set. The score was tied 14-14 when an attack error by the Mules and a service ace by Kristen Douglas gave the Falcons the set and match victory.
 
Jane Underman led the Falcons offensively with 19 kills, while Emily Zellers led Messiah defensively collecting 19 digs. 

Match Two: Gettysburg College 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-22)

The Falcons and Bullets of Gettysburg College exchanged scores early in the first set to tie the score at six. The Bullets went up late to take the lead 22-17. Kills by Laura Bergin and Cara Stine gave Gettysburg a commanding 24-17 lead. The Falcons did not give up and scored from a kill by Taylor Hook. The Bullets crushed the Falcons hopes of a comeback with an attack error by the Falcons.
 
The second set of the match was another close contest with the Bullets pulling away at the end. The score was tied four times throughout the match but the Falcons could never grab the lead. The Bullets led 21-20 late in the set when they rallied off four straight points from three errors committed by the Falcons and a kill by Joosje Grevers to give Gettysburg the second set victory.
 
Messiah started strong in the third set and led during the beginning of the set until the Bullets tied the score at 12 a piece. Both teams exchanged scores to tie the score at 15. With the score all tied up, the Falcons scored four unanswered points from two attack errors committed by the Bullets and a kills from Brooke Gallagher and Jane Underman to take a 19-15 lead. The Bullets came back with eight unanswered points of their own to take a 24-19 lead. The Falcons kept playing hard scoring three points off kills by Brooke Gallagher and Jane Underman. Gettysburg's Courtney Morrow tallied the final kill to give the Bullets the third set and match victory.
 
Jane Underman led the Falcons offensively with 14 kills, while Emily Zellers led the Falcons defensively with 11 digs. The Falcons will be back in action Tuesday night when they play Albright College in Brubaker Auditorium.
