Falcons Ready for NCAA, Travel to Face Kenyon in First Round

Grantham, PA – The Falcons are coming off a thrilling run through the Commonwealth Championships to claim their eighth-straight title Commonwealth Conference title. They will look to keep rolling when they face the Kenyon College Ladies to begin play in the NCAA Championship Tournament.
 
The Falcons and Ladies match-up will is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at McBride Field on Kenyon's campus in Gambier, OH. Wednesday's contest will mark the 6th time the Falcons have faced a ranked opponent, as the Ladies are ranked No. 20. The winner of the first-round game with advance to this weekend's four-team pod at The College of New Jersey in Ewing, NJ where their will face Catholic in the second round of the tournament on Saturday.

Below is a snapshot preview of the Falcons' upcoming match-up with Kenyon. It will be the first time ever that the two programs have opposed each other.

How the Falcons got here: Messiah advanced to the NCAA Championship Tournament by virtue of their victory in the Commonwealth Championship on Saturday afternoon, when they defeated the Alvernia Crusaders 3-0 in Reading, Pa. With the victory the Falcons' earned their eighth-straight conference title and their 14th straight trip to the NCAA Championship Tournament.
 
The Falcons are a young and talented bunch that has played to a 14-6 record on the season. All six of the Falcons' losses have come by just a single goal. Four of the Falcons' losses have come to teams ranked in the top six in the country (Salisbury, TCNJ, F&M, and Ursinus) and one came to No. 17 ranked, Lebanon Valley. They have outscored opponents 64-30 and have held opponents to just 9.7 shots per contest. The Falcons are currently ranked No. 19 in the most recent NFHCA poll.
 
The Falcons have a balanced attack with seven different players scoring at least nine points each, though Carissa Gehman leads the way with 25 goals (52 points). Gehman is No. 7 in the NCAA with a 1.25 goals per game average, while Moriah Pfautz (9g, 6a), Taylor Holt (8g, 5a), Becky Ely (4g, 6a) and Emily Rubright (5g, 4a) all have double-digit point totals. Kristin Donohue, Nicole Wilkerson and Ally Morgret have all added three goals a piece to contribute to the Falcons' No. 28-ranked 3.20 goals per game.
 
The Falcons have held opponents to 1.50 goals per game and a 0.603 shots on goal percentage. In turn, Messiah is taking 17.4 shots per game and have outshot their opponents 347-194 on the season.
 
In the cage for the Falcons is senior Carly Day. In Day's first year with the Falcons she has started all 20 games and holds a 1.54 goals against average and 0.725 save percentage. Day was recently named the Most Valuable Player in the Commonwealth Conference tournament where she recorded two shutouts and made four saves.

How the Ladies got here: Kenyon won the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Championship for the third time since 2002 to earn the automatic qualifier into the NCAA Championships. On Saturday afternoon, they defeated Denison University, 1-0 in the conference final after splitting two meetings in the regular season against Denison. Kenyon went 13-1 in the conference, with their lone defeat being at 3-1 loss to Denison at home at the end of September. The Ladies are currently ranked No. 20 in the most recent NFHCA poll.
 
Kenyon's other loss was a 4-1 setback in the Frostburg State Tournament to Washington College (Md.) on September 6th. The Ladies most impressive wins of the year were two victories over then ranked ranked DePauw University on Sept. 13th (2-1) and on Oct. 11th (4-3) – the two losses were DePauw's only two defeats of the year.
 
The Ladies are lead by senior Rachel Hall (13g, 9a) and – NCAC Tournament MVP – junior Maddie Breschi (14g, 6a), with 35 and 34 points respectively. However the Ladies have a roster full of offensive threats, a total of eight players have scored double-digit points this season. Freshman Shannon Hart (11g, 5a) has chipped in with 27 points, while Julie Freedman (7g, 8a), Ceillia Depman (6g, 4a) and Sammy Johnston (3g, 5a) provide depth and a balanced attack that will test the Falcons' backline.

In cage for the Ladies' is freshman, Sarah Speroff who ranks 26th in the country with a .806 save percentage. She has made 83 saves on the year, while allowing only 20 goals for a 1.13 goals against average (18th in the country). Speroff did not allow a goal in the two games of the NCAC Tournament, making four saves in the process.
