Falcons Season Ends With 2-0 Loss to Catholic

Ewing, NJ - The Falcons opened the game on the attack. Dispute holding possession for the first few minutes in the Cardinals end, the Falcons could not get a shot off and by the eighth minute the Cardinals were controlling play.

The Cardinals earned a penalty corner at the 7:52 mark. After Carly Day saved the initial shot Catholic was awarded a penalty stroke when it was ruled that a Messiah player had stopped the ball on the goal line with her body. Maura Campbell made the most of the opportunity, scoring in the left side of the goal and giving the Cardinals the 1-0 lead.

Catholic remained in control of the game until the final minute of the half. The Falcons earned their first penalty corner at the 33:57 mark and Becky Ely and Taylor Holt combined to take three shots in a 10 second stretch. However all three shots were turned away by the Catholic keeper, Analisa Scott.

Early in the second half, with the Cardinals still leading 1-0, the Falcons had chances to even the score but shots by Moriah Pfautz (wide) and Carissa Gehman (high) did not find the frame.

In the 58th minute it looked as if the Cardinals had doubled their lead. Kim Hermann got past Carly Day and took a shot on a seemingly wide open net, but Sara Brooks swooped in to knock the ball away and keep the Falcons just one goal behind. However, just six minutes later the Cardinals would find their insurance goal when Kiera McGovern found the back of the net. Day saved McGovern's initial shot but the rebound went right back to McGovern and she found the back of the cage to put Catholic up 2-0.

Despite three Falcon shots, the Cardinals held on to the lead and won by a 2-0 final. With the loss, the Falcons' season comes to a close. Coincidentally, today's loss to Catholic marks the second straight year that Falcons season has ended against the Cardinals.

The Cardinals with take on host TCNJ tomorrow afternoon for a chance to play in the Final Four next weekend.
