Grantham, PA - The Messiah Falcons defeated the Widener Pride 87-77 to get a much needed win over a conference opponent. In the victory, the Falcons were led by
David Fernandez-Bravo (23 points, 10 assists) and
Geoff Boyle (24 points, 10 rebounds).
In the first-half the Falcons led by as many as five just over six minutes into the game. However, the Pride would come back, using a 13-1 run over a 3:37 span to take their largest lead of the game at 18-11.
The Flacons would come back quickly, using a 10-3 run to tie the game at 21-21 just 1:37 seconds later. For the final 7:45 of the half, neither team held a lead of more than four and the Falcons took a 40-37 lead into the break.
The play from the end of the first-half carried over to the early part of the second. While the Falcons held a lead for the entirety of the second-half, their lead was less than six points until they began to build a cushion with an 11-2 run. The run was highlighted by layups from
David Fernandez-Bravo,
Luke Cable, and
Jimmy Brackett before
Zac Hoy hit a three to give the Falcons their largest lead of the game at 12 points, 63-51.
For the final six minutes the Falcons never let the lead slip below six. And, with the use of free throws, held a ten-point lead 87-77 when the game ended.
In the final two minutes the Falcons went 13-14 from the charity stripe to seal the victory.
Helped in large part by the strong performances from
Geoff Boyle and David Fernanadez-Bravo the Falcons shot exceptionally well on the afternoon. Messiah was an even 50.0% from the field (28-56) and 42.9% from beyond the arc (6-14).
Fernandez-Bravo (23 points, 10 assists) and Boyle (24 points, 10 rebounds) both collected double-doubles in the game. It is the first time this season that a pair of Falcon teammates have collected a double-doubles in the same game.
For Boyle it was his sixth double-double of the year and for Fernandez-Bravo it was his third of the season.
The Falcons are next in action on Wednesday night when they travel to Alvernia. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m.
