Bethlehem, PA - The Messiah Falcons traveled to Moravian College on Thursday night and came away with their second straight sweep, defeating the Greyhounds 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-18).
Kristen Douglas and
Jane Underman led the Falcons with 13 and 12 kills respectively as Messiah improved to 13-1 on the season.
The Falcons comfortable won in all three sets but in the early going it was by no means easy. In the first set, the Falcons held a slim 12-11 advantage over the Greyhounds before rattling off 10 of the next 12 points to take a commanding 22-13 lead. Four kills by
Kristen Douglas highlighted the Falcons' run.
Messiah finally lost a point off of a service error, before winning three of the final four points to take the first set 25-15.
In set two the Falcons jumped out to a slightly better start, nabbing an 11-6 lead thanks in part to two consecutive service aces by Douglas. Just a few points after Douglas' aces,
Jane Underman collected three straight kills, all off of assists from
Brooke Gallagher, to push the Falcons lead to 14-7.
The Greyhounds would not go quietly, as they would fight back and pull to within three at 19-16. Unfortunately for Moravian they couldn't claw any closer as a service ace by
Taylor Hook was sandwiched between two kills by Underman. With the three-point stretch, the Falcons suddenly pushed their lead back to six. Five points later,
Alyssa Vorbeck closed the set with a kill that gave the Falcons set two, 25-18.
At the start of the third set, the Falcons took a commanding 13-3 lead over the Greyhounds. While the rest of the set was relatively level pegging the Falcons used their early 10-point lead to carry them to a 25-18 victory in the set. It was a team effort for the Falcons in the final set as six different Falcons collected at least one kill.
With the win the Falcons continue their stellar start improving to 13-1 on the season. Messiah will next take the court on Saturday in the MAC Crossover hosted by Wilkes. In the crossover they will face Misericordia at 1:00 p.m. before taking on host Wilkes at 3:00 p.m.
