Falcons Hold Off Saints for Tournament Win

Arlington, VA - Messiah College built a late lead and kept the Saints at bay in a 64-56 win at Marymount on Saturday night. The win was a third-straight for the Falcons and it gave them a win of the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament.

Gillian Glackin led the Falcons with 16 points and 13 rebounds and Alecia Rohrer (15 points, 10 rebounds) picked up a fourth-straight double-double to start the season. Dominique Seamon also scored 14 points and grabbed four steals.

The 2-0 weekend gave the Falcons the tourney title, and Gillian Glackin was named the Most Valuable Player of the weekend after averaging 16.5 points and 11.5 rebounds. Seamon was also named the All-Tournament team.

Messiah got off to a great start and led 12-2 late in the first quarter, but Marymount responded with 11-straight points to go up 13-12. The teams stayed within a basket or two of each other for until late in the second quarter when Kristen Smoluk (6) and Maci Thornton (2) combined for eight-straight points to put the Falcons up 32-23.

The Falcons took a 32-27 lead into the half and a Glackin layup midway through the third quarter put them up 39-31. Moments later a 15-foot jumper from Jen Fairbanks and a driving finish by Glackin gave Messiah a 43-34 lead with 3:56 left in the period. Marymount kept pace thanks to heavy pressure and an aggressive halfcourt attack, but a jumper by Glackin at the end of the quarter gave Messiah both a 48-39 lead and a chance to take a breath.

"(Marymount) has some forwards that are strong and can really play," head coach Mike Miller said. "We're becoming better with games like this, and our defense is improving, too. This was a great game for us to grow in."

With seven minutes remaining and Messiah leading 51-44, Glackin came up with a big blocked shot in the paint to set up a bucket in the paint by Rohrer. A possession later Glackin hit another jumpshot to give Messiah it's largest lead of the half.

The Falcons withstood a furious attempt by the Saints to catch up, thanks mainly to 7-10 shooting from the free-throw line in the last two minutes.

Messiah had a huge advantage at the stripe throughout as they made more free-throws (27) than Marymount attempted (21). The Falcons also forced 18 turnovers and scored 23 points off those giveaways.

"Gillian was great, and Dominique hit some big shots and played like a veteran," said Miller, speaking on the effort of his team. "We're getting better every night."

Three different Saints scored in double-figures with Nicole Viscuso (16) leading the way.

Now 3-1, Messiah next plays on Tuesday at Eastern University at 6:00 p.m.
