Grantham, PA - For the second time this season Messiah and Stevenson went to overtime, but this time around the extra session did not favor the Falcons. Stevenson outscored Messiah 13-8 in the final five minutes to take the win after both teams battled through 40 intense minutes to a 73-73 stalemate.
In the overtime period the Falcons scored took a two-point lead on a
Zac Hoy layup after he collected a loose ball and drove down the middle of an open paint. The Mustangs countered with a jumper to tie the game and a layup by Erik Fisher to take their first lead of the overtime – the layup accounted for two of Fisher's game-high 26 points, he also collected 11 rebounds.
Â
With the Mustangs leading by two,
David Fernandez-Bravo fed
Josh Clippinger over the top for an easy lay-up to tie the game. The Mustangs responded with a three to take the lead back. On the ensuing possession Fernandez-Bravo drove with the right hand and finished the layup between two defenders. The layup cut the lead to one point.
Â
On Stevenson's next possession,
Josh Clippinger came up with a big block and was fouled collecting the rebound. Clippinger went to the line and buried both of his free throws to give the falcons a one-point lead. Unfortunately it would be their last points of the game. With Messiah leading 81-80 and with 1:51 left, the Mustangs started a 7-0 to end the game.
Â
In the final two minutes the Falcons missed four three-point attempts before falling by a final score of 87-81.
Â
As exciting as overtime was, the forty minutes of regulation were just as thrilling. Neither team led by more than six points in the entire contest and the game included 22 ties and 13 lead changes.
Â
In a tie game with 5:27 remaining in regulation, Fernandez-Bravo found
Geoff Boyle on the right baseline, who slammed it home with two-hands to give the Falcons a lead. Less than two minutes later and with the Falcons now trailing by two,
Zac Hoy found Fernandez-Bravo on a backdoor cut who finished the play with a reverse layup to tie the game.
Â
As much of the game had played out, the score remained close with under a minute left. With 30 seconds remaining, the Mustangs had a defensive breakdown and left
Josh Clippinger wide-open for a huge dunk down the middle of the lane to tie the game. After a Mustang shot from the top of the key clacked off the iron, the game headed to overtime.
Â
David Fernandez-Bravo led the Falcons with 24 points, he also collected a game-high nine assists. Joining Fernandez-Bravo in double-digits were
Josh Clippinger (19 points),
Geoff Boyle (17) and
Zac Hoy (13). Clippinger also pulled down a career-high 13 boards in his second career double double – his first was against John Jay earlier this season.
Â
The loss moves the Falcons to 5-8 in the conference (12-9 overall) and they are on the outside looking in at the current playoff picture. With three games remaining the Falcons need to win all three and hope for some help to sneak into the Commonwealth playoffs.
Â
Messiah next takes the court on Wednesday when Albright travels to Grantham, in the Falcons' final regular season home game. Game time is slated for 8:00 p.m.
