Baltimore, MD - The Falcons of Messiah College struggled offensively and fell by a score of 7-4 to the Gophers of Goucher College. The Falcons saw goals from
Ryan Mayer,
Drew Pagenkopf,
Tyler Goglio, and
Ryan Van Bochoven. Pagenkopf tallied the only assist on the game for the Falcons.
The Falcons sputtered offensively in the first quarter by scoring only one goal and struggled to gain offensive possession. Goucher started the quarter with three unanswered goals from Owen Demmerly (2) and Sam Morgan.
Messiah responded with their first score of the game with a goal by
Ryan Mayer and assisted from
Drew Pagenkopf. Mayer's initial shot was stopped by Goucher's goalkeeper, but the ball trickled in for the goal. Goucher added another goal to end the opening quarter and led 4-1.
The second quarter didn't see much scoring as the Falcons tallied the only goal.
Drew Pagenkopf scored an unassisted goal from the left wing. Goucher had offensive possession for most of the second quarter, but Messiah played sound defense and didn't give up a score.
The third quarter saw much of the same on the offensive and defensive ends of the field. Both teams created long possessions and both defenses played well and didn't allow much scoring.
Goucher struck first in the third quarter with a goal from Leo Sementilli. The Falcons answered with a goal of their own from
Tyler Goglio and made the score 5-3 in Goucher's favor heading into the fourth quarter.
The Gophers started the fourth quarter fast with back-to-back goals from Sam Morgan. Messiah battled back with an unassisted goal from
Ryan Van Bochoven. Unfortunately, the deficit was too much for the Falcons to overcome and the Gophers came away with the victory.
Statistically, the Falcons led in saves (11-9), ground balls (26-24), and face-offs (10-5) while the Gophers led in shots on goal (18-13) and turnovers (11-17).
The loss dropped Messiah to 2-3 overall, and still 0-1 in the Commonwealth. The Falcons will next play on Saturday when they travel to Gwynedd Mercy University at 12:00 p.m.
