Glenside, PA - The Falcons picked up their first two Commonwealth wins Sunday when they swept Arcadia University 11-0 and 16-4.
Both victories came in only five innings as the Falcons (9-6, 2-0) took advantage of six defensive errors by the Knights (5-9, 0-6) to score 11 runs in game one, then unleashed 14 hits in game two for the commanding win.
Game OneClaressa Mees (3-3) threw her second shutout of the season in the first game of the doubleheader, holding Arcadia to only three hits en route to her third win to date.
Neither team scored in the early innings until the Falcons posted a single run in the top of the third. The run came after
Carrie Fix drew a leadoff walk then was followed by a bunt from
Brooke Pompeo. The Knights failed to make the play and ended up throwing the ball around, giving Fix the opportunity to be aggressive and eventually cross the plate.
The Falcons added five runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take the double-digit lead. In the fourth, two errors by Arcadia, singles from Pompeo,
Becky Notte,
Amanda Jones,
Katie Tankred and a double by
Courtney Allen helped contribute to the scoring frenzy. Errors continued into the fifth for the Knights, where three miscues led to five more Falcon runs. In the inning, the Falcons had only one hit, a two-run single from Allen.
Offensively, five different Falcons picked up hits in the game.
Courtney Allen went 3-4 with two RBI and a double, while
Becky Notte (two RBI) and
Brooke Pompeo (one RBI) each added two hits.
Katie Tankred and
Natalie Lamoreaux also contributed a RBI.
Carrie Fix scored three times for the Falcons without recording a single hit.
Game TwoThe Falcons carried their offensive momentum from the first game into game two, posting runs in each inning. They wasted no time claiming the lead as they scored three runs in the top of the first.
Courtney Allen made it happen when she knocked in Pompeo and Fix on a single through the left side. She later scored on a wild pitch to give Messiah the 3-0 lead.
The Knights countered in the bottom of the frame after being held scoreless through 13 innings leading into the second game of the doubleheader. Their run came on two hits and an error by the Falcons.
Arcadia's counter attack was quickly subdued when
Nicole Blantz (single) and Fix (double) combined to drive in two more runs in the top of the second.
Back-to-back five run innings extended the Falcons' lead to 15-4, putting the game out-of-reach for Arcadia.
The Falcons accummulated five hits in the third and four hits in the fourth enroute to 10 additional runs. Notte,
Amber Bingaman, Blantz, Fix, Allen, Lamoreaux, and Jones each contributed hits.
