Myrtle Beach, SC - The Falcons headed south to warmer temperatures and no snow to begin the 2015 season. Despite Friday's favorable weather in Myrtle Beach, the Falcons (0-2) dropped a close 3-2 decision to the University of Mary Washington then followed with a 6-1 loss to Neumann University.
Game One vs. UMWThe Falcons' offense made an early impact in their first of two games Friday afternoon, taking a 2-0 lead after just three innnings.
In the top of the second,
Amanda Jones doubled and made her way to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Katie Tankred to get things started. Moments later,
Emily Quatrale executed a perfect suicide squeeze to score Jones and take the early 1-0 lead. The Falcons added another run in the top of the third when
Becky Notte turned a walk into a scoring opportunity following a wild pitch. Jones's RBI single drove her in to go up 2-0.
The Eagles (6-2) scored two runs in the fifth to equalize things at 2-2 then pulled ahead in the seventh on a two-out, walk-off single.
Claressa Mees (4 1/3 innings) and
Carrie Fix (0-1) both saw time in the pitcher's circle with Fix taking the loss.
Game Two vs. NeumannIn the second game of Friday's twinbill, the Falcons found themselves on the wrong side of a 2-0 game after just two innings of play. Momentum shifted in the bottom of the fourth, however, when
Courtney Allen homered to bring the Falcons within one.
The Knights responded in the next half inning, posting a single run and then extended their lead to 6-1 in the top of the seventh.
Despite getting runners on-base in the bottom of the seventh, the Falcons failed to push a run across the plate.
Carrie Fix (0-2) claimed her second loss in as many showings on 6 1/3 innings of work, while
Courtney Allen provided some relief late in the game; picking up the final two outs.
The Falcons will bounce back tomorrow afternoon to take on Penn State-Harrisburg at 9:30 a.m. and Hilbert College at 1:30 p.m.
