Falcons Sting Hornets, Sweep Double-Header at Home

Grantham, PA - Messiah College downed the Hornets of Shenandoah University on Wednesday, winning both games of the double-header, 3-0 and 8-3.

The wins pushed Messiah to 22-7 overall, while Shenandoah fell to 9-21.

Game One
The Falcons scored just three runs in Game One, but it proved to be enough for Claressa Mees. She completed six innings and allowed just six hits to earn her 11th win of the season.

Messiah got all the runs they would need in the second and third innings, with Katie Tankred's two-run single in the third proving to be big blow. Messiah's first run in the second was unearned by way of an error on the Hornets' third baseman.

The Falcons collected just four hits in the win, three less than Shenandoah. But Mees and Courtney Allen (1 IP; save) frustrated any hopes at a rally. The Hornets stranded runners on base in the first, second, fourth, fifth (2), sixth (2), and seventh innings. The two combined for just three strikeouts, two of which came from Allen in the last frame.

Mees and Allen also combined to allow zero walks.

Game Two
In Game Two the bats came alive for the Falcons to the tune of 14 hits and eight runs. The top six hitters for Messiah each collected multiple hits, and both Becky Notte and Amanda Jones collected three RBI.

The Falcons went up big early thanks to five runs in the first three innings. A four-run third inning was a backbreaker for Shenandoah, and it was all set up by three-straight hits to start the frame. Carrie Fix (single), Brooke Pompeo (bunt single), and Amanda Jones (single, RBI) made it 2-0, and the Falcons were just getting going.

Becky Notte brought in the next run with a sac fly, and then Courtney Allen doubled home Blantz to finish the streak.

Fix was fantastic on the mound through the fifth, but she ran into some trouble in the sixth. After getting two quick outs, an error opened up a three-run rally for the Hornets. After the erorr, two singles and double brought Shenandoah within 5-3, but Allen came in once again to earn the save. She induced a flyout to end the sixth, and then sat down the Hornets 1-2-3 in the seventh to end the game.

Messiah did earn back those three Hornet runs in the bottom of the sixth, with Jones' two RBI double proving to be the big hit.

Fix earned the win after allowing seven hits and three runs (zero earned) and just two walks.

The Falcons will turn around quickly to play on Thursday against Commonwealth opponent Alvernia University. The games will be in Reading, Pa. at 3:30 p.m.
