Falcons Offense Stalls, Fall to PSU Harrisburg

Grantham, PA - Just two days after tallying 15 runs in a seven-inning game against Widener, the Falcons' offense was shutout in a 4-0 loss to Penn State Harrisburg.

Penn State Harrisburg beat the Falcons behind a stellar pitching performance by Will Chaney. Chaney went the distance, allowing just three hits in the shutout while striking out seven. Austin Mellinger, Josh Good, and Colin Fry each picked up a single to account for the three Messiah hits.

Peter Fisher started on the mound for the Falcons pitching four innings. Fisher gave up six hits and two earned runs, but the Falcons' bats didn't give him any support and he took the loss. Zach Luman and Tyler Mitcheltree kept the Falcons in the game. The duo combined to pitch five innings while allowing just five hits and two earned runs out of the bullpen.

The Nittany Lions tallied runs in the second, third, fifth and six. After a groundout led off the Lions' half of the second, Zachary Ottobre singled on a ball that hit off of Fisher. Ottobre would score on a Josh Brubaker double to left center. The Falcons would get out of the inning when Jon Heisey caught a fly ball and gunned down Brubaker at third for his first outfield assist of the season.

Penn State Harrisburg scored another run in the third on an RBI single and added their third and fourth runs of the game on a ground out in the fifth and a fielder's choice in the sixth.

The best chance the Falcons got all game came in the bottom of the first inning. Austin Mellinger reached on an error by the third baseman to lead off the inning. After a fielder's choice Josh Good singled to put runners on first and third. A stolen base put two runners in scoring position, but a ground out ended the threat. After stranding two runners in scoring position in the first, the Falcons could only get two more runners back there across the final eight frames.

While the loss does drop Messiah to 17-17 on the season, it does not affect their second seed in the upcoming Commonwealth tournament beginning on Thursday.

Before the Falcons begin postseason play they have one more regular season game. Tomorrow the Falcons will travel to Carlisle to take on the Dickinson Red Devils.  Earlier this season the Falcons took down the Red Devils 16-10. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
