Late Goal Downs Falcons Against No. 2 Sea Gulls

Salisbury, MD – The No. 17 Messiah Falcons and No. 2 Salisbury Sea Gulls played 64 minutes of scoreless field hockey, but with six minutes remaining Hannah Miller connected off a penalty corner to give Salisbury a 1-0 lead.

The Sea Gulls dominated play on the afternoon, out shooting the Falcons 18-1 on the game. Between the pipes Shelby Landes collected 10 saves, but the one goal was the difference and Salisbury collected the 1-0 victory.

After the start of the game was delayed 45 minutes due to thunderstorms in the area, the Falcons struggled to get anything going in their offensive end. Seemingly ever pass and opportunity the Falcons put together in the attacking end was pressured or could not get through.

The Falcons could not muster a single shot in the first-half. Salisbury on the other hand fired five shots with Shelby Landes collecting three saves. The Sea Gulls best chance came 21 minutes into the game. Off a penalty corner Salisbury got two shots off, but Landes made both saves to keep the score tied at zero.

With 20 minutes left in the second-half Salisbury had a chance to break the scoreless tie. The Sea Gulls had a chance against the run of play and worked the ball to the endline before crossing it to the middle, a shot attempt was popped high and wide of the cage and out of danger for the Falcons.

With seven minutes remaining in regulation, the Sea Gulls got on the board off of a penalty corner. Sam Johnsen put the ball into play off the corner and found Hannah Miller at the top of the circle. Miller took two dribbles in and ripped a shot that found the right side of the cage.

With a 1-0 advantage, the Sea Gulls had a golden opportunity for an insurance goal less than three minutes later. Salisbury was awarded a penalty stroke with four minutes remaining. Casie Preisch's shot was wide and the margin remained 1-0.

In the final four minutes the Falcons were unable to put together an offensive attack and fell by a final of 1-0.

Messiah's lone shot in the contest came 10 minutes into the second-half by Kaylor Rosenberry off a penalty corner. Rosenberry's shot was blocked by the Sea Gulls defense.

With the loss the Falcons move to 1-3 on the season with all three of their losses coming against teams currently ranked in the top 10 in the country.

The Falcons will next the field on Wednesday when Juniata College travels to Grantham. Game time slated for 6:00 p.m. on Anderson Field.
