Grantham, PA - Messiah College outscored Johns Hopkins 16-6 in the fourth quarter to break a tie and win their first game of 2016, 59-49.
Kaitlyn Hoff led the Falcons with 12 points and four assists, and
Alecia Rohrer fell a rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine boards.
Gillian Glackin added 10 points to join in double-figures.
The win for Messiah was their fourth in as many games, and they will now look forward to hosting Lycoming College on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. in a MAC Commonwealth contest.
In a game full of streaks, Messiah and Hopkins found themselves tied at 43-43 at the end of three quarters. The Falcons, who battled back from a deficit to tie the game, was the aggressor to start the frame and they went up by two on a long jumper by Rohrer. The basket started a 14-4 run that included a forceful three-point-play by the first-year forward. The Blue Jays tried to keep pace when they came within 49-47, but an offensive putback by
Jen Fairbanks and a driving layup by Glackin gave Messiah a 53-47 advantage.
Messiah's first double-digit lead came with still 2:27 to play, but Hopkins could not rally to challenge the outcome.
The 10-point win was suprising only because the two teams traded blows from the first whistle to the end of the third frame. Hopkins played well early to build a 12-9 advantage, but Messiah raced back to lead 15-12 heading into the second quarter. That's when the runs became more exaggerated as Hopkins rode the back of Beatriz Williams to a 24-17 lead. Messiah answered with an 8-0 run of their own, with Rohrer and
Jocelyn Chavous hitting back-to-back jumpers to give Messiah a 25-24 advantage.
Hopkins' fastbreak pressure earned the lead back, however, and they went up 31-27 at the break. They continued their strong play in the third quarter and went up 35-27 to accout for their largest lead of the second-half.
Messiah still trailed 42-35 with 3:42 to go in the third before
Libby Timmer's three-point play on the left side started an 8-1 run that tied the game at 43-43 with ten minutes to play.
Williams led the Blue Jays with 13 points, though she only tallied a single point after halftime. Caroline Corcoran was just behind her with nine points while Rachel Cook added six points and a team-high eight rebounds.
As mentioned, Hoff, Rohrer, and Glackin led the Falcons with a combined 33 points. Glackin and Rohrer each added three blocks.
Libby Timmer and
Jocelyn Chavous each tallied a season-high seven points.
