Falcons Dominate in Spring Break Opener, Weaver gets 500 Wins

Clermont, FL – The Falcons opened their Spring Break games in dominant fashion, picking up a decisive 14-0 win over Cedar Crest College and a 10-4 victory over No. 10 Alfred University. The win over Alfred marks head coach Amy Weaver's 500th program victory. In her 19th season as Messiah's skipper, Weaver has amassed an overall record of 500-254-1.

Messiah 14, Cedar Crest 0 (5 innings)
Monday evening's lop-sided victory over Cedar Crest College came in just five innings and showcased hits from seven different Falcons.

Carrie Fix (1-1) threw four complete innings before giving way to Madelyn Yannetti who fanned all three batters faced in the fifth to close out the game. Fix gave up just three hits in the outing and struck out six, resulting in her first win of the season.

The Falcons (2-1) amassed 12 hits against Cedar Crest (1-2), posting multiple runs in each inning.

In the first inning, Amanda Jones and Amber Bingaman combined to knock in five runs and give the Falcons the early lead. Jones's three-run triple kicked the scoring off then was followed by an inside-the-park homerun from Bingaman, the first of her career, that pushed two more runs across the plate for the 5-0 lead.

The Falcons added two more runs in the second, this time off the bat of Becky Notte, who drove in Brooke Pompeo with a single to right field. Pompeo reached on an error to leadoff the inning, setting up Notte's RBI. The Falcons' final run of the inning came on a passed ball that scored Courtney Allen.

In the third inning the Falcons found themselves in unfamiliar territory, facing two outs after just two batters. Fortunately this didn't faze Fix who stepped up and ripped a double down the left field line. She then stole third and later scored on an error by Cedar Crest's pitcher. Another Cedar Crest error gave way to the Falcons' ninth run that allowed Pompeo to score. The Falcons added two more runs in the inning, extending their lead to 11-0. Notte and Jones each picked up a RBI in the frame.

The Falcons tacked on two more runs in the fourth this time on two hits and two errors, resulting in the 14-0 decision. Fix and Pompeo were credited with the final RBI of the game.

As mentioned previously, seven different Falcons contributed hits in the win with Amanda Jones leading the way. Jones went 3-for-3 in the game and was a homerun shy of hitting for the cycle. She brought in a team-leading four RBI. Carrie Fix, Becky Notte, and Sydney Boreman added two hits a-piece with Brooke Pompeo, Notte, and Amber Bingaman getting credit for two RBI each.

Messiah 10, No. 10 Alfred 4
In the night cap, the Falcons were held scoreless in the first inning then posted two runs in the second and one run in the third to take a 3-0 lead over the nationally ranked Saxons. Right-hander Courtney Allen held the Saxons' bats at bay, allowing no hits and striking out five through three innings.

The Falcons broke things open in the top of the fourth, adding four more runs to their tally to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Brooke Pompeo hit a bases-clearing double to knock in three runs then was followed by an RBI single from Erin Cressman to round out the scoring in the frame.

The Saxons got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, tallying three runs on three hits, but their efforts would quickly overshadowed by the Falcons.

Messiah put the game out of reach in the fifth on a two-run double from Becky Notte. The Falcons tacked on one more run in the frame to end their scoring and hold a 10-3 lead.

Allen held the Saxons to just one run in the seventh, closing things out for the 10-4 win with a season-high 10 strikeouts.

With the win, the Falcons move to 3-1 on the season. The victory marked a monumental day for Messiah's head coach Amy Weaver, who earned her 500th career win with the Falcons. Weaver becomes the 29th coach in NCAA Division III softball history to reach the milestone.

The Falcons will play two games Tuesday afternoon, facing the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg at 3:00 p.m. then follow with a 5:00 p.m. game against Ohio Wesleyan University.
